Reports: Pro-Trump 'armed march' on Ohio Statehouse planned for this weekend
Source: Columbus Dispatch
The Washington Post reported far-right online forums talked of planning for "an armed march on all state capitals" and included specific mention of Columbus following the deadly storming of the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob on Wednesday.
A couple hundred pro- and anti-Trump protesters clashed outside the Statehouse at a "Stop the Steal" rally on Wednesday as a mob of thousands gathered in Washington D.C. to sack the Capitol in the mistaken belief the election was stolen from Trump.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol, which is responsible for security at the Statehouse, cannot comment on planning due to security concerns, said Staff Lt. Craig Cvetan, patrol spokesman.

And if they shoot dead authorities/police/Nat'l Guard, etc in any sort of large numbers ... it's going to cause a serious discussion about taking these idiots gunz away, a discussion that wouldn't ever happen otherwise.

(11,179 posts)Its a simple thing - GUNS are NOT SPEECH. You can protest and wear costumes and shout disgusting things to your heart's content - but you raise a riot or threaten people's lives or brandish firearms, you are no longer protesting and you are an insurrectionist. Those in commission of a felony HAVE NO RIGHTS to bear arms OR to protest.
You do not get to do whatever you desire because your guy lost, not here, not now, not ever.
And if they CHOOSE to march with guns, then I will again reply - I will pry the guns from their cold dead hands and turn them in for destruction and recycling.

(24,906 posts)Anyone open carrying a gun to the state Capitol will be breaking the law. And concealed carry requires a permit, which is very difficult to get in some counties. Get convicted of any gun law violation and you'll lose you're permit, and maybe your right to own guns at all. California also does not recognize carry permits from any other state.
Our republican controlled legislature in Michigan banned open carry on capital grounds today. Funny how they can bang the gong for unlimited weaponry until their own precious behinds are on the line.

(151,269 posts)and post 10 times the number of expected protesters at the state capitol. Line them up and block access to the Capitol grounds altogether. Guard members should be fully armed.
Let the "armed protesters" face a overwhelming number of uniformed soldiers when they show up. That should sober them up a little.
Half measures are not going to work. Each state needs to put up a clear, overwhelming defense of its Capitol. There should be no question, whatsoever, about who is actually in charge.
All 50 states need to make this kind of response to any expected "armed protest." Period.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Yes, this.
MineralMan
(151,269 posts)There should be no mistaking the massive response when the protesters arrive. They should see that what they're doing is a complete waste of their time.

I suppose we still don't know who was responsible for the totally inadequate preparations and manpower, but I have a sick feeling it goes all the way to the top.

(10,749 posts)Every law enforcement office available - in the capitol and from nearby cities - riot gear, those tanks many places got during the Bush years. National Guard. And, while I don't want to be or sound cavalier about the use of weapons, somehow the terrorists must know that an armed response is what they should expect.
And while they may not want to announce their plans, they must be very visible in their efforts to secure the capitol. Barriers, fenced in areas, rerouting traffic, access controls, ambulances. And they need to start now. No last minute, night-before, oh-shit-we-haven't-done-anything behavior. Be prepared for mass arrests, and let the terrorist see that this is what they confront.
And to the extent that they can coordinate with other states so that these sorts of responses are consistent, I think that would be good.
Should all of this be necessary? After all, this is America. Well, it is America, and if this is what it takes to remain America, then, yes, all of this is necessary.
MineralMan
(151,269 posts)They also need to have a clear order of battle, just in case the morons decide to fire their weapons. Everyone should understand the planned response to that, which should be immediate and decisive.
I doubt that any of the boys playing soldier would fire at the people protecting the Capitols, but if they do, that fire should be returned massively. If the shooting starts, the only ones left standing should be those guarding the Capitols. It is just that serious.
Some might poo-poo what I'm saying, but there are people in the far-right militia groups who are insane enough to start firing at National Guard soldiers and law enforcement officers. Some are probably close to suicidal in normal times.
If they show up to protest, they should be met by overwhelming forces. That is the only way. They want a war. Some of them, anyway.

States need to repeal laws that allow thugs to carry guns in public.

(661 posts)Change laws to disallow open or concealed carry on capitol grounds, and certain other government properties. I do not say all government property as hunting on public lands may be appropriate.
It the law disallows particularly open carry on capitol grounds then the protesters know they are asking for jail time and confiscation of their weapon(s) if they choose to continue their obvious intimidation tactics.
I enjoy target shooting, though I have never owned a gun. So I am not fully anti-gun. But, to me, open carry with the intent to intimidate and cause fear for political reasons seems to fit the definition of terrorism. I am definitely anti-terrorism.
Thanks.

Recipe for revolution:
Take all those states that allow open carry, add in 100 million gun nuts with radical religious and/or political views, stir in decades of false and/or misleading right wing incendiary "news", then add in one lying fuck of an amoral, power hungry Hitler wannabe.
Mix well for four years, and bring to a boil with false claims of a fixed election.
We now have a huge pot of insurgency stew ready to be consumed by the mindless mob.

(169,761 posts)It was the same sort of idocy here in PA where the biggest GOP mouthpieces were whining about and taking the state to court for a law that was actually written and PASSED UNANIMOUSLY (except for one of their members in the state House) by the GOP-controlled state legislature. One of the impetuses behind them doing it was to get rid of the straight-party voting that was permitted in the state at the time, that they complained "benefited Democrats".
And then they went into a complete disconnect by pushing the throwing out of ALL ballots, which would mean throwing out the votes for THEM too, forcing them to step down from their own seats, and this fact just didn't seem to register in their pea brains.
This goes to something even simpler than having "critical thinking" skills. It just requires "thinking skills". Period.

(71,929 posts)... old single shot shotgun over twenty years ago when I lived in Nebraska, but I am thinking of purchasing a 9 mm pistol and an AR-15. There are all sorts of "libertarians" out here that I just know are capable of going house to house if systems start failing in the pandemic.
This place is just too 'good old boy' for my tastes. They'll be friendly at church, but I think if the shit hits the fan their inner Hitlers will show themselves.
Maybe I shouldn't have put up that little "sanctuary home" sign. Think I'll get another. Much bigger.
As soon as the pandemic lets me, we're gone.

(20,356 posts)Less than 50 miles from St. Paul it turns into a sea of deep red. I STILL see houses in my area that are so brainwashed they're flying their Trump flags high and proud. Coworkers are still raging about Biden stealing the election. One was going off about how the Capital insurrection was an Antifa false flag operation. I used to be fairly outspoken about my dislike of Trump at work, but this past week I've been keeping my mouth shut for fear it will lead to screaming or worse.
I've already owned an AR and a shotgun for years, and a surprising number of friends were asking me for recommendations on what to purchase this past summer and fall as things started to look scary. They say we saw 23 million gun sales in 2020, with 5+ million people purchasing guns for the first time this year, a new record. I wonder how many were fellow Democrats arming up?

Now, I just don't want to be put up against a wall or shot while on my knees. I really hate having to consider firearms at this late point in my life.
Its crazy all over. Biden said something that should push the pause in all of us. He said "there are no red or blue states, it's all about red and blue counties."

We'll see if the law enforcement makes them feel threatened enough to crouch, draw, and fire.
If enough of them do it, it'll probably deter the police temporarily. Perhaps giving the MAGAS enough time to retreat
