Former Democratic Leader Daschle Warns Against Trump Impeachment
Source: Bloomberg
Daschle, who led Senate Democrats the last time the chamber was evenly divided, was joined by Trent Lott, who led Senate Republicans at the time, in urging Congress instead to formally censure the president. The two men were also their parties Senate leaders during President Bill Clintons 1999 impeachment trial.
Daschle called impeachment at a moment that party control of the Senate is so tenuous a mistake, saying it would first galvanize Trumps supporters and then delay work on crucial issues. Incoming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has favored proceeding, even with the coming 50-50 split in the chamber.
An impeachment mechanism is just not the right course at all if they want to hold the president accountable, Daschle said at a forum Monday with Lott held by the Bipartsian Policy Center.

There is no more pressing agenda than accountability for the crimes committed by Doturd, his family and his enablers in Congress and elsewhere.

(12,618 posts)with the Green Party when Daschle ran things. As I've gotten older I've chalked it up to naive youth and optimism, but it's also easy to forget just how weak Democrats were back then, thanks in no small part to "leaders" like Daschle. The party today is so much better.

Or as President Biden said, do Senate business in the mornings and deal with impeachment trial in the afternoons for as long as it takes (shouldn't take long).

(34,661 posts)Daschle is making boo-coo bucks as a lobbyist now.
Times change,we are dealing with a Narcissistic Sociopath. Who poisoned the well of trust and contaminated the GOP to the extent that it needs to be throttled to a Minority for several decades.
Daschle should be reminded of his lack of Democratic Party building in his Home State. Went from most registered voters to less than fifty per cent of the high water mark as of this election cycle .

(9,173 posts)the only real mechanism we have to deal with this criminal. Censuring? LOL, he'll wear that as a badge of honor. And how could his supporters possibly be galvanized MORE by another impeachment? They attacked the US Capitol on Trump's behalf, for fuck's sake!

(10,478 posts)Trump is gone. It serves no practical purpose. Actually, it's a childish political stunt. Kind of a version of stealing the lectern. If this were year two of Trump it would be purposeful, but it's not. It's a show of power with no point to it.
BusyBeingBest
(9,173 posts)It's not a political tactic being deployed. Republicans made a mockery/stunt of the process with Bill Clinton, but Trump's impeachment(s) properly reclaim the purpose. It's our only redress against a lawless President. The time frame does not matter, what matters is that the process WILL be conducted and recorded in Congress, and 100 years from now, people will learn from the history that Donald Trump led a disgraceful uprising against his own country and government AND faced proper judgment for it.

(11,142 posts)are all but a lost thing. We have spent many decades and much money to create many ways to dodge both. I have always said that the 80s were the 'it's all about me!' decade, and the 90s were the 'it wasn't me!' decade, due mostly to the fact that in the former, people were all about self-importance, yet when the chickens came to roost in the decade of litigation, suddenly no one did anything wrong to anyone regardless of facts and/or reality. The fact that those seditionists were allowed to leave the Capitol buildings tells me what I need to know. The fact that, had those same people been any color other than glowing white, there would have been such a police presence and way more action on the part of law enforcement than there was against those same glowing white people also tells me plenty. Those who truly bear responsibility for this horror need to be smacked down HARD. But, I am not holding my breath...

(2,699 posts)... Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says President Donald Trump's behavior gave House Democrats no choice but to move toward impeaching him a second time after the deadly assault on the U.S. Capitol.
What he did was certainly impeachable," Reid told The Associated Press in an interview Monday. He said the president's actions inciting a mob that ransacked the Capitol is "about as close to criminal as anything I can imagine, what he's done.
The House is scheduled to begin debating a resolution Wednesday that charges the president with incitement of insurrection. Before the debate, Democrats are first calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke constitutional authority under the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office before Jan. 20, when Democrat Joe Biden is to be inaugurated.
House Democrats plan to move quickly on the articles but delay a Senate trial for 100 days, which Reid said would allow them to first take action on Biden administration nominees and another round of coronavirus relief legislation...
