NYT: Trump Had To Be Dissuaded From Dropping In On His Own Impeachment

President Donald Trump had to be dissuaded from appearing in person as the House began its proceedings and ultimately voted to impeach him a second time, The New York Times reported late Wednesday.
Advisers told the Times that Trump had to be talked out of going to the House chamber to offer up excuses after he incited a riot at the U.S. Capitol last week.
As lawmakers cast their impeachment votes on Wednesday, an official said that the President instead busied himself by awarding medals to performers such as Toby Keith and Kay Coles James, the president of the Heritage Foundation.
The scene of a president eager to justify his action as totally appropriate as he did to reporters on Tuesday echoed a similarly defiant Trump who wanted to make an appearance during his first impeachment in December 2019, advisers told the Times.

He has such inane belief in his own persuasive powers. That, and needing to be front and center at all times.

(20,836 posts)These awards from Trump will always be known as the Presidential Medal of Freedom To Hate and feature a puddle of blood.
Figures Toby Keith would be honored. Trump wouldn't have given him a medal unless he believed him and Keith to be on the same page.

(52 posts)It would have been difficult for all those republicans to vote against impeachment right after hearing him blurt out a confession and threaten to do it again in person.

(591 posts)I want to know how Trump would explain why he called the November Presidential election "the worst election in the world" as it clearly added to all of the other things said which revved up all of his supporters who were there to support him.

(3,016 posts)I'm very hard of hearing, having been mainstreamed to manage with lip-reading to supplement my damaged hearing. Some of my friends are completely deaf and sign to communicate, a skill I never learned. They tell me that trump's frenzied, uncontrolled gestures while speaking are considered to be a warning sign in the deaf community. A person who flails about like him is seen as dangerously unstable. Anyone who signs like that is to be avoided.
Harker
(17,733 posts)He exhibits so wide and varied an array of warning signs that it amazes me anyone outside his immediate family even cares what he thinks or says.
While gestures, used purposefully, can accentuate speech, flailing around as he does makes him appear as though he's either trying to distract people or convince them he's earnest despite his insincerity.
Either way... yes, he should have been avoided.

(31,292 posts)he of course still thinks all he has to do is get in the room with them, or get on the phone with them, and he'll get his way based on the strength of his personality. it is tragic that for so many people that is true, but trump has finally run into reality on his way to the coronation.

He'd have been not only be the first "pResident" to be impeached twice, but the first to be offered a headline gig in a sideshow.
You know...whenever he's available. Early Feb....after 5 to 10, 10 to 20. Whenever, as I said.

(53,140 posts)After he made a speech that sounded very much like Joliet Jake begging Carrie Fisher not to kill him, they could have got way more than ten Republican votes to impeach.
