Why it matters: McAuliffe, who already served one term as governor, faces competition from four other Democrats. He's looking to Pelosi to help burnish his credentials with female and progressive voters in this year's contested race.
What they are saying: "Terry's progressive record as Virginia's 72nd governor is second to none," Pelosi said in a statement. "His bold vision and inclusive leadership are exactly what Virginia needs at this critical time, and I am proud to endorse him for governor."
The backdrop: McAuliffe has mainstream party credentials as a longtime Clinton associate and former chairman of the Democratic National Committee. He's facing two women state Sen. Jennifer McClellan and Del. Jennifer Carroll Foy as well as Gov. Justin Fairfax, who is Black.

(57,079 posts)... it just makes me question why Terry doesn't run for another office held by a Republican.

(57,079 posts)... office, he gets to set out until another office comes by. Let him run for a seat in the legislature.
If the Lt Governor didn't need to resolve several sex assault accusations, I'd look at him before Terry.
Nothing wrong with Terry McAuliffe, but he does look a little too much like me and people who look like me are over-represented in government.

"Unlike other state governors, Virginia governors are not allowed to serve consecutive terms. They have been barred from immediate re-election since the adoption of Virginia's second constitution, in 1830. However, a former governor is permitted to run for a second term in a future election."
Wish that was the case here in TX there are no term limits for governorship. We were stuck w nutter Rick Perry for 3 terms, & now Greg Abott is thinking of going for a 3rd term, along w Dan Patrick as Lieut. gov. Oy vey, we need Beto or some other high profile Dem candidates to kick these 2 to the curb.

(15,390 posts)A Democrat can win there, but not one like Beto. He's just too far to the left and uncompromising to win a statewide election in Texas. I wish that weren't true, but it is. A good moderate can win though.

(13,037 posts)We have several good local candidates but outside of their areas they're not so well known. I've given up on the castro brothers.

(15,390 posts)I think he could have won, but he just refused to move to the right on anything. Nobile? Sure, but I'd rather win. I remember a few months before the race, when people were criticizing Nike for pulling the Betsy Ross flag sneakers, Beto said good. He also said he supported kneeling for the National Anthem during football games a month before the election. Great, but you just don't say that in Texas, especially in 2018. Since the election, he has even moved more to the left on guns.
Are there any good moderates there that might run in '22?

(13,037 posts)Lina Hidalgo is fantastic but not sure if she has enough governing experience.
Steve Adler mayor of Austin is fabulous as well but only known within Austin area.
I also love Chrysta Castaneda who ran for TX Railroad commissioner but lost in november unfortunately. She is an engineer & lawyer, & brilliantly knowledgeable re: the energy sector, particularly oil & gas which she's worked in. I hope she w run for another position soon.
Wendy Davis lost a few years ago to Abbott but same position - may still be too far left for TX.

(15,390 posts)Fantastic speaker too. Cruz was also very unpopular. People wanted to vote against Cruz. I'm not saying you'd have to run a Joe Manchin-type conservative Democrat, but you definitely need a Max Baucus-type no-nonsense moderate who never talks about gun-control to win.
If Beto runs again, Republicans will play the tape every day of him saying "Hell yes, were going to take your AR-15, AK-47."
