Biden to cancel $9bn Keystone XL pipeline's permit, says source

Source: The Guardian

Joe Biden is planning to cancel the permit for the $9bn Keystone XL pipeline project as one of his first acts as president, perhaps as soon as his first day in office, according to a source familiar with his thinking.

Donald Trump had made building the pipeline a central promise of his presidential campaign. Biden, who will be inaugurated on Wednesday, was vice-president in the Obama administration when it rejected the project as contrary to its efforts to combat the climate crisis.

The words “rescind Keystone XL pipeline permit” appear on a list of executive actions likely to be scheduled for the first day of Biden’s presidency, according to an earlier report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Biden had previously vowed to scrap the oil pipeline’s presidential permit if he became president.

The Apache tribe has been fighting to control land that has been managed by the US government but is part of land set aside in a treaty for their sole use.

“The deposit sits below land that belonged to the tribe before the United States existed. An 1852 treaty between U.S. officials and the tribe that is still in force set aside the land for the Apaches’ use.

In 2014, the U.S. Congress and then-President Barack Obama approved a plan to let Rio exchange land it already owns for land above the copper, with the caveat that the swap could not occur until an environmental study was published. The outgoing Trump administration plans to publish that study on Friday, clearing the way for the exchange within 60 days.”

Isn’t it finally time to allow all Native American tribes to have sole ownership of the land they occupied before the US even existed and was negotiated for their use through treaties? Why does the US government have any say in their private property? Native Americans are US citizens,,but the federal government still controls their lives to an extent not endured by other citizens.

They should have full autonomy over their lands, as Native Americans do in Canada.
