Pompeo attacks multiculturalism on Twitter: 'Our enemies stoke these divisions'

On Tuesday, outgoing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted a attack on "multiculturalism" from his government Twitter account.
"Woke-ism, multiculturalism, all the -isms — they're not who America is," wrote Pompeo. "They distort our glorious founding and what this country is all about. Our enemies stoke these divisions because they know they make us weaker."

Pompeo's remark is the latest in a series of Twitter remarks that appear calculated to position Pompeo for a political future, with him attempting to laud his own record under the Trump State Department. Simon Tisdall of The Guardian has described Pompeo's final actions in office as "setting booby traps and laying diplomatic minefields in global conflict zones" in order to trip up President-elect Joe Biden.

Multiculturalism is when you have a bunch of distinct ethnic (or cultural) identities living in a region together. The melting pot is when you have a bunch of distinct ethnic (or cultural) identities forge a new mixed identity in the region.
These are completely different social models. They are not synonyms. While I don't think there is inherently a conservative/liberal split between the two notions, I'd judge that conservatives usually advocate for the melting pot. (Likely because it gives them cover to express racist ideas, like "speak english" ).
Furthermore white supremacy can exist with either multiculturalism or a melting pot. Examples with multiculturalism include apartheid and antisemitism. Examples with the melting pot include the creation of an american white identity (a melting pot of european identities) and the jim crow south.

Cultural appropriation is a multicultural criticism of the melting pot but it strikes me as preaching to the choir, since liberal melting pot advocates are likely to agree with statements like "I think the best culture takes the best parts from many cultures". I get that you're saying the process is flawed when directed by white supremacy but that's true of literally everything that white supremacy touches (including multiculturalism).
I did also point out that the melting pot is often used as cover for white supremacy but, again, this is no different than other things that aren't inherently white supremacist that are used in the same way (the most stark example is the 180 on "the free market" when "the free market" decides that supporting far right rhetoric and literal insurrection is a bridge too far).

(54,908 posts)I drafted and taught a multicultural program in every subject, but always returning to culture. Arts. Dance. Music. Stories.
I taught the kids vocabulary in Spanish, Patwa (French), Swahili, Mandarin Chinese, International Sign Language, reflecting ALL their backgrounds.
I taught American History which included the myriad of contributions from African-Americans and Asian immigrants. I had the kids come with me to the Museum of History to see the pyramid to show the beginnings of organized civilization.
BTW, I was the only white person in the school. I did a lot of research to give my students what they needed. I turned white privilege on its head -- and again, this is almost 40 years ago. We were more progressive than the NYC public schools.
So, in closing, screw you Michael R. Pompeo. It's the only way to stop you from speaking out of your ass.

We all know where the divisions originate. It's in the minds of all you white supremacists who think this is their country, and refuse to share it with the "not us".
Just what is this country all about, Mike; what are you all about?
This nation has spent 244 years learning to be a home for all peoples; a place where the differences between peoples could be shown to be far less significant than their similarities.
It's not been easy. At every junction there have been roadblocks to the process of seeing all Americans, indeed all peoples around the globe, as children of God.
And you, Pompeo, with your white supremacist brethren have been the one constant roadblock to that process.
All you have to do if follow the teachings of the leader of the religion that you espouse to; the teachings of Jesus. Do that and it will all work out.
But then it seems to me that a lot of your ilk are most definitely following the teachings of your leader, and he certainly isn't Jesus.
And you have the nerve to say someone other than yourself is creating divisions.

I don't understand people like this. If everyone came from the same background and had the same experiences, what a boring world it would be.
How does acknowledging the multicultural history of this country make us weaker? Makes no sense to me. I love the endless diversity of humanity, and I'm an old white guy. Someone else celebrating their culture doesn't threaten me or make me weak.

Back in the early 1900s a lot of people in this country were actively trying to keep people like his ancestors out, claiming that they were too different to properly assimilate into real American culture. This eventually led to the quota system for immigrants that favored people from Northern and Western Europe and put strict caps on immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe.
