McConnell blames Trump for having 'provoked' the mob that stormed the Capitol
Source: Washington Post
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday pointedly blamed Trump for having provoked the violent mob that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6.
Speaking on the Senate floor, McConnell noted that the Senate was meeting for the first time since that day, when Congress ultimately finished counting the electoral votes that cemented Bidens victory.
The mob was fed lies, McConnell said. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people, and they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like. But we pressed on, we stood together and said an angry mob would not get veto power over the rule of law in our nation.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), among the senators who led the challenge of electoral votes in states Biden won, was presiding at McConnell spoke. McConnell said Biden enters office without a mandate for sweeping ideological change, calling him a presidential candidate who said hed represent everyone. McConnell, soon to be the chambers minority leader, said Republicans will pursue bipartisan agreements where they can.

(11,504 posts)But McConnell has no shame, so I wouldn't be surprised if he found some way out, likely pivoting around the "you can't convict a former President" nonsense, which is clearly wrong.

(170,592 posts)He could have immediately called the Senate back into session and the House would have been ready with what they said could amount to only a 1 - 2 day trial. They could have then debated, held the vote for conviction, and removed him. But he refused in order to keep his GOP street cred.
And then he goes on about "bipartisan" where he blocked over 400 bills from the House due to HIS "partisanship" while he blocked the confirmation of Merrick Garland for bullshit reasons, packed the courts with what amounted to RW activist judges who ironically thought the Ghouliani show and "krakens" were so bad, that even THEY could not stoop to the level of accepting that lunacy.
It will be a pleasure to watch him BACK in the "Minority" Leader position after 7 years.

It will now be a full time job of ALL RepubliCONs to play cover ass, and trying to divert all attention away from their involvement, support, encouragement and complicity in forcing Trump on all of us.

(7,857 posts)The fact that over the past 4 years some his colleagues, and American citizens have been targeted by Trump and his minions was of no consequence. Mitch thought he could ignore the violent rhetoric. He got a wake up call.

(1,303 posts)The media is calling out the republican leadership for allowing the lies about the election to fester and grow. McConnell has never done anything to reign in Lindsay Graham and the others. If McConnell had put a stop to it, there would have never been an attack on the capitol.

McConnell, you just said that Trump is guilty of what he has been impeached for.
So, why didn't you allow the trial to proceed, you colossal dickhead?

GMAFB.... at literally the 11th hour and 59th minute of Trump's presidency, Moscow Mitch finally grows a spine? Puh-leeze. Mitch's words today were like following a condemned man to the gallows shouting obscenities and threats at him.
Coulda used some of that bravado a year ago during the first impeachment Mitch. At the very least.
