Republican lawmakers involved in the rally that preceded the Capitol insurrection reportedly asked Trump for preemptive pardons
esnodgrass@businessinsider.com (Erin Snodgrass) 3 hrs ago

With only hours left of his presidency, President Donald Trump has decided not to grant preemptive pardons to Republican lawmakers who asked for them after the Capitol insurrection, a new CNN report said.

According to the Arizona Mirror, Reps. Andy Biggs and Paul Gosar sought preemptive pardons from Trump. Both Biggs and Gosar, along with Alabama Republican Rep. Mo Brooks, have been accused of helping protesters plan the Jan. 6 "Stop the Steal" rally that preceded the deadly Capitol insurrection.

The movement's organizer Ali Alexander, said the three congressmen helped him "scheme up" putting maximum pressure on Congress while they were voting.

While Biggs and Brooks both denied any involvement in the planning, and Gosar declined to comment, they are apparently among the "several Republican lawmakers who are alleged to have been involved in the rally" that have "sought clemency from Trump before he leaves office," according to CNN.

And probably his shitty spawn too.

He’ll bust out a pardon he wrote himself on a hamberder wrapper one day soon, and then the legal wrangling will commence. This will buy him some time in the news, which he craves like a junkie craves smack. And time to flee if needed...

There is no down side. If they are charged and the evidence looks strong, might as well have the secret pardon as a last ditch effort. Might work and would definitely delay things.

that so called secret pardons are still on record with the DOJ, they're just not public. I'm betting someone will leak any secret pardons to the media.

They'll be documented with the DOJ and someone will leak the info. But I predict he didn't pardon the congress men. There would be nothing in it for him.

It would mean he thought what they did was okay... which could complicate his own defense if any legal/civil action is taken against him for his own part in inciting the riot.

Plus, there's an argument that he can't pardon his own co-conspirators in a crime. That would be an avenue toward someone challenging these pardons in court, which could then open Trump up for further legal exposure.

My own internal thoughts on the whole pardon thing was wrong. I really thought that he wasn't going to issue any pardons because knowing Drumpf l thought his thoughts would be "if I'm going to jail (on state charges) then why should I let everyone else be free??" He's such a selfish guy that I thought it would anger him to no end to have him being the only one sitting in a jail cell while everyone else got off scott free!

but an expert (previously worked in such matters with Bush 1 & Clinton) says there is nothing stopping Trump from giving secret pardons. And they don't even have to be written down. Trump could do TikTok vids as pardons, it seems.

Ridiculous power when you have a totally dishonorable, crooked POTUS.who is probably getting direct pay for the pardons he sold & kickbacks from his cronies who sold pardons on their own.

Since Article 2 states that any parties involved in the impeachment of a president are not eligible for pardon simply by being a party to the crime, legally, those pardons wouldn't be valid until after the impeachment (if at all).

Also, they make trump look more guilty. If he pardons people for something he incited, then it shows he is aware of his guilt and should be punished.

So, its really a win/win. Either he didn't and our country can get justice or he did and they are invalid pardons.
