Biden White House won't commit to FBI director on administration's first day

Source: Washington Post

The new White House press secretary dodged a question Wednesday about whether President Biden has confidence in FBI Director Christopher A. Wray — a sign the new administration was not willing to publicly commit on its first day to keeping him at the agency’s helm. “I have not spoken with him about specifically FBI Director Wray in recent days,” Jen Psaki said in response to a question posed at the Biden administration’s first White House news briefing.

Psaki gave similar replies to a number of unrelated questions, appearing to want to avoid making significant news outside of her prepared remarks about the series of executive actions Biden had taken moments earlier. She promised there would be regular media briefings and that she would follow up with reporters on questions she could not answer.

Separately, a government official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the incoming administration, said Wednesday evening that Biden’s team has sent no signals it had concerns about Wray, who was a frequent target of attack from President Donald Trump. A lawyer and former Justice Department official, Wray began as FBI director in 2017 after Trump fired his predecessor, James B. Comey, who had served less than four years of what is typically a 10-year appointment.

Wray’s job was in jeopardy for much of the past year, and Trump and his senior aides repeatedly discussed firing him after November’s election. The relationship between the White House and the FBI was hostile for much of the last administration, as Trump repeatedly blasted FBI leaders for investigating his 2016 campaign and accused them of trying to sabotage his presidency. Trump’s removal of Comey set off a chain of events that gave rise to Robert S. Mueller III’s special counsel investigation and threatened to undo his own tenure as commander in chief.

for obvious reasons - which is what occurred with predecessors like Mueller... to the point where Obama even requested that Congress provide an exemption in that case, to extend Mueller's term an additional 2 years for continuity purposes.

What has happened unfortunately, is that the media has "normalized" the dysfunction of the Trump administration and its handling of appointees - particularly those positions that were designed to carry over into a next President's term (like the FBI Director), and their lack of rigorous criticism of the highly partisan appointments, in some cases, those with major ethical and security issues, means that they expect successive Presidents to be as intransigent and corrupt.

so his term extends well beyond Biden's first term. To be fair, Wray's been professional in the job. He has been honest and straight-forward in his testimony to Congress. There really is no reason to ask him to resign or to replace him. In any event the FBI falls under the purview of DoJ which will be led by a Biden appointee.

I just posted what WaPo sent out as a breaking news this morning. I saw a later LBN post where a different outlet interpreted the Press Secretary's response differently - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10142677230

My remark was more along the lines of the types of "assumptions" that a number of media organizations have been making about how Biden would operate based on how they normalized how Trump had operated. It is time for them to re-calibrate or reset, start over, and exercise some patience to determine the direction. IMHO.

and the idiot media is even worse today. They don't seem to have a concept of "Legislative Branch" vs "Executive Branch".

Asking the President (head of the Executive), over and over, about the processes of the Legislature, is an example of the willful dismissal of Civics 101.

They are so desperate to strut their stuff after being threatened, insulted, ignored, virulently parodied in thousands of tweets, and shoved aside, where there were months with no pressers at all, they are diving into the pool with a bell flop.

Biden just got sworn in less than 30 hours ago and they act as if they were in stasis for 4 years and are now continuing the 8 years of Obama's terms, with everything already formulated and in place.

... the "confidence" question. I understand it's become a political signal, but I would not like answering a question like these "lost confidence" or "have confidence" questions. I would say, "The President has confidence in ____ and expects the ____ will transition smoothly. There are no personnel changes to report, at this time."

and considering that Biden had only been sworn in about 7 hours prior, the media somehow assumed that Psaki and Biden had been in their positions for several years.

We know there was a lot of resistance from the previous administration's appointees and notably, their staff, when it came to transition activities (the transition itself, having been purposefully delayed by the GSA ass, until after GA's multiple recounts and final certification was completed, despite the fact that by then, their number of Electoral College votes weren't needed since the 270 number had already been reached).

So even with Biden and his staff's best laid plans, they are going to have to dig and dig and then dig deeper to get the "real" state of affairs and how to address them, so they can revise or adapt the draft frameworks of their plans.

I would ask Hillary Clinton to run it. She’s not corrupt, plus she will get all corrupt agents to jump ship or retire. They would lose their damn minds. I would just smile and clap.
