Scott DesJarlais Hit With Ethics Complaint For Sex With Patient

Source: Huff Po

WASHINGTON -- The anti-abortion Tennessee congressman and doctor who admitted last week to an affair with a patient was hit with an ethics complaint Monday.

The Huffington Post revealed the relationship between Republican Rep. Scott DesJarlais and the patient last week, printing details from a transcript of a phone call from 2000 in which he pressured the woman to get an abortion.

Desjarlais admitted to the x-rated doctor-patient romps in an email to supporters, but denied the woman had gotten pregnant, in spite of a long conversation in which the two bicker over whether or not he should accompany her to an abortion clinic in Atlanta. The woman would have been about four months pregnant at the time, according to the email DesJarlais sent defending his actions in the affair.

DesJarlais, who now casts himself as a family-values Republican, also said the relationship was entirely consensual and that he had an open relationship with his then-wife, Susan. The two had been trying to fix their faltering marriage at the time, according to court records, and the reconciliation collapsed shortly after the abortion discussion was recorded. A judge declared DesJarlais' indiscretions had started the marriage down the path to dissolution, beginning in 1998 when his wife alleged improper marital conduct by her spouse. DesJarlais admitted to four affairs in court papers.

(FYI, this guy is currently my "representative" though I shudder to call him that)

They interviewed a couple of women at what looked to me like the Kimball Wal-Mart shopping complex (granted, this is one of the more right-wing corners of a district that has elected a lot of blue dogs), and they were falling all over themselves to talk about "mistakes" and "forgiveness" and a whole bunch of rubbish. They would literally vote for a man they consider by their own definitions to be a murderer, so long as he has an "R" by his name.

Of course my hope is the report, coming out of a Chattanooga news station, was heavily biased, and that the rest of the district isn't so blind.

DesJarlais has about five times the amount of money that Stewart has. Stewart got elected easily to a state level position, and he's pretty popular among the people I hang around with. I actually had a bad experience with him as a lawyer for one of my family members (but he sure never pressured any of them to have an abortion while he cheated on his wife!); as an elected official he is pretty progressive for Tennessee, and I would like to see him at the national level.

He never did anything to my family and he's not a lawyer. That is a different Stewart from Winchester. Now I get to vote for him without feeling any sense of division at all.

...in the same class as the sort of life or death illness or injury (or psych issue) which an exploitative doctor might use to take over a patient's life.

It's still technically an ethics violation, but not a career ending one, or even one that warrants a suspension of his licence to practice.

There's still plenty about the relationship to provide reason to put the boot to the "good doctor", but the actual fact of the relationship is not really amongst them.

What a slime ball.

He is one of the 2008 Tea Baggers......ya gotta love 'um.

I believe he can be beaten. This district is very rural & largely agricultural. They don't like this kind of activity. It is also quite religious, so all that "forgiveness" stuff might sell, or might not. These are mortal sins in the eyes of many there. His oponent has deep family roots in the district which should help us. However, he is rather young, which could work against us.
( I lived in two different towns in the district in the past, but live in another TN district now.)

This is also the district where in 2008 the incumbent (Lincoln Davis--blue dog) was not allowed to vote because of the voter purge. He made a big stink over it, but it was too late.

Here is our candidate: http://www.votestewart.com/home
