Washington (CNN).................
.....................
Guard members ended up having to spend several hours Thursday night resting on the concrete in the parking garage before the mistake was fixed and they were moved back to the Capitol.
The exact chain of events that led to the Guard members moving to the garage is unclear, and by Friday afternoon a series of conflicting explanations and finger pointing only added to the confusion about why the troops were given the impression they were no longer welcome in the Capitol even as their job of protecting it is ongoing.
The resulting confusion and finger-pointing was impressive even for Washington. The National Guard was quick to blame Capitol Police as the authority that directed their troops to vacate the premises Thursday night, but Capitol Police immediately and forcefully denied any involvement. By Friday afternoon, the two units had put out a joint statement seeking to resolve the conflict, but that missive still left unanswered the question of who gave the initial order to move.
According to one source with the Administrative Office of the Courts, an agency that occupies the Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary building where the garage is located, it was the National Guard that decided to use the parking garage after being shown the facility on January 19. ......................

(15,359 posts)doesn't make it look like they have much distance between them though. If they were sleeping on cots anyway, what's the difference? I assumed they would have heaters as well. If they don't, they should. I think we must have bought a shitload of them for our troops.
These guys are trained to dig holes to live in if need be in about any conditions. I kind of wonder if the troops thought that was a big deal? The real outrage should be the reason/s they are there in the first place. They should all have been at home or their regular jobs.

(17,835 posts)when my husband was in the Air Force (early 70s) he worked on b-52s and said there were times that he had to sleep outdoors under those planes. So parking garage sounds pretty good except for nasty car fumes.

(9,173 posts)the equivalent of YEARS in tents all over the Middle East, 12 hour shifts in 120 degree heat, etc. I mean, come on. Getting a bit silly to hear their "harrowing tales" of the parking garage for 18 hours.

(13,288 posts)In addition, everyone there is provided a new, free supply of N95 masks every 2 weeks. Ramping up production, by any means necessary, is long overdue in the US. We have the means to do this and at the very minimum, National Guard troops should be issued masks, especially when they're guarding our capitol. Unfortunately, Republicans don't believe in our government succeeding with large endeavors, and have purposely failed in this simple task. They have cost the lives of an obscene number of Americans.

(58,338 posts)Biden just invoked the DPA to make PPE. Not sure if that includes N95 masks for everybody. It will be a while before that DPA order is implemented.

Officials with the Massachusetts National Guard on Friday released a statement identifying and correcting falsehoods in a report that suggested a Massachusetts congressman was responsible for Guardsmen being sent to a parking garage.
Without mentioning the source of the report, the statement appears to reference an article published by the conservative Breitbart website on Thursday. The authors said a source told them Rep. William Keating had "complained about one National Guard member not wearing a mask at a cafe in the building" and linked that to troops being "forced to evacuated the Capitol building grounds."
"It makes no sense and quite frankly could not be farther from the truth," Maj. Gen. Gary Keefe, the Adjutant General of the Massachusetts National Guard said in a statement.
"The relocation of National Guardsmen within the U.S. Capitol building grounds has nothing to do with Congressman Keating reminding a soldier of the requirement to wear their mask," the general wrote.
The statement explains that Capitol building officials asked the Guardsmen to move their break area to a garage because the Senate was in session.
Keefe also said that photos of the Guardsmen in the garage have been taken out of context.
"What the stories failed to mention was that they were on a break, resting between shifts," Keefe said in his statement. "At the end of the duty day, soldiers returned to their hotel rooms."

(20,927 posts)It was for a few hours and it was rectified.
No one had to sleep there and no one was hurt, unless of course if you count Sean Hannity who will call for impeachment Monday. After all, Trump would have given them rooms at his DC hotel for only a 70% mark up.

(5,195 posts)"We don't have any members of the Nebraska National Guard serving in D.C. who were asked or told to move out of one area and move to another," Maj. Scott Ingalsbe said.
Sgt. Jacob Anderbery said he and other guardsmen actually enjoyed the set up in the parking garage.
"It's really nice having room to put all your stuff and lay all your stuff out, and being a block in a half from where you're working," Anderbery said.
