Donald Trump facing eviction from Mar-a-Lago over rule breach

The use of Mar-a-Lago as former President Donald Trump's permanent home is under legal review by the town of Palm Beach and the arrangement may be discussed at the upcoming town council meeting, the town manager told CNN.
When Trump turned the private residence into a social club, he had agreed with the town to limit his stays at Mar-a-Lago, and now some Palm Beach residents say he is violating that agreement.
Trump bought the former estate of Marjorie Merriweather Post in 1985, and subsequently turned it into a members' only club in 1993. The plan was -- as with most Trump deals -- to turn a profit. Yet in order to transform the private residence into a revenue-generating business, Trump had to agree to certain limitations, based on guidelines presented as deal-breakers from Palm Beach.

At the time, following several appearances at town council meetings by Trump and his lawyers to plead his case for approval on the evolution of the property, Trump assented to abiding by the 21-day rule. His signature is on the agreement.

Not the stuff of International News you might think. Q: How much do Aussies loathe Donald Trump? A: Yes.

(10,599 posts)At worst, he'll file suit, and tie it up in court for years and years, eventually appealing to the Supreme Court if necessary.
The chances of him actually leaving Mar-A-Lago are Zero.
Rules are for others to abide by. They do not apply to him.

(8,610 posts)He'll be in Mar-A-Lago until the cash runs out and he can no longer bribe his way along.
Which if you recall is probably going to be soon. No one is left who can cash him out of this one. That is why he's been so desperate of late IMO.
What happens when one of his creditors or a federal prosecutor attaches the property in lieu of payment? What does he do when he cannot play at Doral or any other course?
Does anyone recall the very sad story of Manuel Noriega and how the wealthy drug and money laundering people he empowered turned on him when they no longer wanted him?
Don the Con may have a few more folks he can manipulate but he's on the down slope and headed in the same direction as Manuel.

(114,615 posts)Creditors are going to force fire sales of his less profitable properties, but he's likely got enough to meet the loans and tax payments.
He might also give up his license to run MaraLardo as a club, membership is falling off now that it isn't an attractive place to see and be seen, slipping bribes under the table. He might also just fight it for years, his lawyers changing all the time as they bail because he doesn't pay his bills.
I think he's going to end up going full bore Howard Hughes.

(76,703 posts)I don't think there's enough revenue to cover debt service.
The debt is much higher than advertised per the Moody creditworthiness reports of 2013 & 2018.
Those reports did NOT include the loans from German & Chinese banks.
There's enough evidence out there to reasonably conclude the TO has been borrowing money to cover interest on existing debt.
If it had never been POTUS, I think we'd have been seeing BKO stories in the media for the last 3 years.
Now, the brand is toxic to 70% of Americans & hundreds of millions in other countries.
I think there's much deeper financial issues.
Now, we do agree there won't be missed meals. BKO doesn't take all means of support, & there's the ex-POTUS pension.
But, there's going to be a desperate scramble for luxury
ProfessorGAC
(76,703 posts)Sorry for the acronym. I honestly thought it was commonly known.
It's short for bankruptcy organization.
It really should be BKR, because it's really "reorganization". But, the business world did BKO. Not sure why.

He is definitely going to find his world getting a lot smaller very quickly as his multinational empire gets sold off to satisfy creditors. He might not be able to hang onto both his gilt and marble NYC two story penthouse pied a terre and MaraLardo unless one of them generates income.
He's been in trouble since the 2008 crash, something he never recovered from since he had to scramble for loans to maintain his empire, those loans coming with unacceptable terms. The bills are now falling due and while what he has left will afford him luxury for the rest of his life, it will feel like Skid Row to him.

(76,703 posts)What I was disagreeing with was your statement that there's enough to cover the debt.
I think he's farther underwater than you. Especially with the toxicity of the brand! That's s a detail only.
But, we agree on everything else.

(60,968 posts)I have no idea how many rooms (or suites ?) there are. He may want it to be the Trump "compound" - where all of his extended family and close friends could live.
Could he afford this? None of us know if his business interests are even net positive. He will however have his pension and it is very likely he will have a ghost written book or two. Remember he still has millions - probably significantly less than 74 million - but still millions that will buy his words. Even following a bankruptcy, he could use just those two things to regenerate more than enough to finance a life style like that.

(5,914 posts)I recall the whole thing is that he could either live there or run it as a golf resort, but not both. If he runs it as a business, Palm Beach is gonna want its taxes on the money rolling in every day.
No one is abridging his freedom whatsoever. The people who live around there are tired of the circus and inconvenience he creates whenever he's shacked up there.

(20,591 posts)that he and Malaria are looking at several properties to buy in the area. I saw some pictures on some south Florida website yesterday. I doubt he'd buy any of the ones in the layout because there wasn't enough faux-gold decor to suit his garish tastes. Besides, where's he going to come up with $20 million or so? He's cash poor, as everything he has is tied up in heavily leveraged properties. I don't think there's a single bank in the world that would extend him credit now.

(53,194 posts)You can stay no more than 7 days at one time or 21 days per year.
When he started the club, the one down the street wouldnt accept you if you were Jewish or nonwhite. Mar-a-Lago would accept any rich person. But now its just a way for Trump to launder money.
