George W. Bush Wades into GOP Civil War as Matt Gaetz Stirs Wyoming Revolt

Source: Newsweek

Former Republican President George W. Bush waded into the escalating GOP civil war over Donald Trump's impeachment on Friday after Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida rallied to defeat Liz Cheney in her hometown of Wyoming.

As the Republican party grapples with its future under President Joe Biden, the GOP civil war has intensified after 10 members voted in favor of impeaching Trump for allegedly inciting the deadly insurrection on January 6. Bush spoke out one day after Gaetz rallied to defeat Cheney, the No. 3 Republican in the lower chamber who joined nine others in voting to impeach.

Freddy Ford, Bush's chief of staff, told CNN Friday that the former Republican president isn't "thinking about the next election cycle yet," but said that he's "planning to call VP Cheney tomorrow for two reasons: to wish him a happy 80th birthday, and to thank him for his daughter's service."

The show of support comes as Cheney faces mounting GOP criticism over her "vote of conscience" to impeach, with several Trump allies in the House calling on her to resign from her leadership role for breaking with the Republican party.

for Dems would be to have the trial, with all the facts and evidence revealed and the Republicans to acquit Trump. It would show the nation the fullness of their corruption, insanity, and opposition to democracy. If they convict him, Republican party might be able to redeem its image and get rid of the insane, extremist elements in it. But then they would lose the numbers that they gained through their extreme populism.

So the Republican choice right now seems to be between lower numbers but rationality or maintaining their numbers (which are still a minority of the nation) and continuing on a path that is destructive to the nation and, in the end, to themselves.

I am not much impressed by Bush's support of Cheney. Bush led the continued inclusion of the religious extremists that Reagan previously appealed to, which Trump elevated to a cult.

support to a traitor, and that makes traitors out of them. They will also understand that they are indicting him to try to clean their names.

I would rather see trump indicted, and then convicted for the other crimes he has committed during and before the presidency. I want to see the results of the DNA showing he actually raped the journalist. No breaks for the buffoon.

Oh, and not convicting him would tell people like Josh Hawley that it is OK to be a criminal, your party will support you all the way.

Says a lot about today's GOP that the administration of these WAR CRIMINALS is fondly remembered as a time of normalcy compared to the treasonous fascist hiding out in Mara Lago.

I think the thing about Bush is that he favored the wealthy and got us into two wars but he didn’t actually try and destroy our institutions or our democracy.

I think Bush and especially Cheney are war criminals that enacted some horrible policy, especially the growth of the surveillance state and the tax cuts for the rich. But I stick by my comment that their mission wasn’t to destroy our institutions as opposed to the Trump administration, whose goal was chaos and destruction.

I am so amazed at how low the bar has dropped when we start thinking of the Bush days as "normal."

But I have had those very same thoughts myself.

We have to stay focused on the lineage of all this corruption.

Comparing 43 to 45 is like comparing regular poop to diarrhea; having several basement leaks as opposed to a basement flood,
and the crème de la crème, the odor of cow manure as opposed to the odor of rotten, dead fish.

In other words, one was really bad and we are still suffering some the consequences, and the other was a full-blown catastrophe that history will record nearly took down our republic.

Dotard corrupted our institutions and tried to drive a stake through America's heart.

Each Republican President is more of a disaster than the preceding one. I shudder to think of the next GOP nominee.

The Tea Partiers are now the honorable ones who speak out against Trump!
