Jared Kushner nominated for Nobel peace prize
Source: The Guardian
Former White House senior adviser Jared Kushner and his deputy, Avi Berkowitz, have been nominated for the Nobel peace prize for their role in negotiating four normalisation deals between Israel and Arab nations known as the Abraham Accords.
Kushner, who is Trumps son-in-law, and Berkowitz, who was the Middle East envoy, were key figures in negotiating deals between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco.
The two former deputies to then-President Donald Trump were nominated by American attorney Alan Dershowitz, who was eligible to do so in his capacity as a professor emeritus of Harvard Law School. Dershowitz defended Trump in his first impeachment trial last year and told the Wall Street Journal on 20 January that the Senate should dismiss the article of impeachment against the former president, as he was no longer in office.
Among others nominated for the prize this year are Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, the World Health Organization and climate campaigner Greta Thunberg. All were backed by Norwegian lawmakers who have a track record of picking the winner.

Every year bad actors are nominated and they never get through, neither will Kushners' faux plaudits.

Also, should Jared receive a Nobel prize then Alfred Nobel should be exhumed and punished.

(3,159 posts)Shep Smith was still on Fox when, during one of those Fox fascist-news group-hug shows where morons were drooling and slavering over the thought of giving excruciating pain to brown people, he slammed his hand on the table and shouted This is America! And America does not fucking torture! The fascists, of course, were shocked! Shocked, I tell you, that one of their own [he was never really one of them] would interrupt a pleasant conversation about the benefits of beating, choking, waterboarding, and starving prisoners with such language!
Smith, of course, has long since left Fox although his departure was years after his comments about America and torture. He was the only newscaster on the network with a consistently level head. Chris Wallace has since emerged as a voice of reason (at times).
But Dershowitz, yes, with that ugly attempt at sanctifying torture with the cloak of law, proved to the world what a worthless scumbag he is and, in fact, has always been.
Thanks for the reminder! Its important to remember both who the villains are -- and what they have done to earn the title and the shame that goes with it. I refer to Dershowitz as Captain Underwear when his name comes up in conversation. Maybe Ill add Torture Warrants to the title: Torture Warrants Captain Underwear Dershowitz. It would probably sound more official in German!

(24,873 posts)My problem is that it is designed to isolate Iran, which has the real possibility to enflame tensions further in the region
I'm not sure that qualifies as promoting peace
on edit: It also has the possibility of increasing tensions in western Africa since the accord recognizes Morocco as the owner of the western Sahara (which is disputed)

(7,794 posts)Middle East peace without including the Palestinians and the West African territorial dispute settlement without including the Mauritanians and Senegalese. It's like getting the Beatles back together while ignoring that Lennon and Harrison are dead already. Or restoring the Bell monopoly while excluding cell phone technology.
But in truth it was NEVER about peace in the first place. It was only a front, a cover for normalizing the continued access to resources exploitation without respect for the wishes of the affected peoples. Colonialism rewritten for a new age. The probability of continued deadly disaster directly proportional to the profits gained by the bad-faith actors. In both cases leveraging the jealousy and distrust of existing enmity to contaminate (with a dash of greed) the responsible judgement of the signatories.

Nominations are way easier to get, since a lot of politicians has the right to nominate. But the Nobel Peace Committee does not have to listen to any of those suggestions.

snip-"Alan Dershowitzs old friends shunned him on Marthas Vineyard
It all started with an op-ed in the Hill published on June 27 in which Dershowitz, like any good author, tried to promote his book by linking it to a currently hot topic of discussion.
At the time there was a lot of talk about civility in the context of White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders being refused service at the Red Hen restaurant in Virginia. Dershowitz, who is currently trying to get people to buy copies of The Case Against Impeaching Trump, chimed in with an op-ed about how despite not favoring impeachment, he disagrees with many of Trumps policies.
But that is not good enough for some of my old friends on Marthas Vineyard, he wrote. For them, it is enough that what I have said about the Constitution might help Trump. So they are shunning me and trying to ban me from their social life on Marthas Vineyard.

(16,254 posts)He told the Associated Press Trump deserves the honor for working for a peace agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel which opens up for possible peace in the Middle East.
The president has predicted he would win the prize for a lot of things, but said the process is unfair, so he wont. In April of this year, he also ranted against the committee, demanding to know when it would revoke Nobel prizes awarded to journalists. He actually meant Pulitzer Prizes and he repeatedly misspelled Nobel as Noble.
Trumps predecessor, Barack Obama, won the prize in 2009.

(12,182 posts)That that lizard can be recognized in such a major and positive way...ugh. Still, "nominated" doesn't mean "awarded" and perhaps someone who has something to gain by winning his favour just gave him an ego stroke.
And, while we're on the subject...
While I don't like to disparage any worthwhile peace initiatives, the countries involved are not exactly a hotbed of extremism regarding Israel. I bet we could negotiate a similar deal with Iceland, Belgium and Burkina Faso.
