Blinken: Capitol riot response 'sends a powerful message' to other countries

Newly sworn-in Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a new interview that the U.S. government's response to the deadly Capitol breach on Jan. 6 "sends a powerful message" to other countries.

Speaking with NBC News's Andrea Mitchell, Blinken touched on how the Capitol riot has affected the nation's standing on the international stage. Mitchell noted that U.S. adversaries are using the breach as a propaganda tool against the U.S.

"The attack on our own democracy on Jan. 6 creates an even greater challenge for us to be carrying the banner of democracy and freedom and human rights," Blinken said. "When we are challenged, including when we challenge ourselves, we're doing it in full daylight with full transparency."

Blinken also argued that dealing with the breach in a public way can work to America's advantage, saying it "sends a powerful message to countries that are trying to sweep everything under the rug."
