Two FBI agents were killed and three others wounded in a shooting Monday morning that occurred as law enforcement officers were trying to serve a search warrant in a "violent crimes against children case" at an apartment in Sunrise, Fla., the bureau said. The suspected shooter was also killed, the FBI said.
The FBI said in a statement that a team of law enforcement officers was at the apartment, located near 10100 Reflections Boulevard, to serve the warrant. The exact circumstances of the shooting were unclear, though the bureau said two of its agents were killed and three others wounded, two of whom were transported to a hospital in stable condition.
Otishia Browning-Smith, a spokeswoman for the Sunrise Police Department, said earlier the agents were serving a warrant with officers from other law enforcement agencies at an apartment in the Water Terrace apartment complex on Reflections Boulevard when the incident took place at about 6 a.m. Browning-Smith said investigators remained on the scene.
The Sunrise Police Department wrote on Facebook just after 9 a.m. that the "scene is safe but due to the ongoing investigation," people in neighborhoods in the area of Water Terrace have been asked to remain in their homes until it reopens to traffic.

(4,787 posts)..although there's a report that 3 agents have died. It also says the shooter committed suicide.
Still early. No word on the reason they were there beyond acting on a warrant.

Cant stress enough how rare it is for FBI agents to be shot and killed in the line of duty. The bureau usually overwhelms suspects with force and tries to take them by surprise. They typically plan these confrontations out meticulously.
Especially for child porn.....

(2,859 posts)Then have a regular uniformed officer pull them over in traffic. It seems like trying to arrest someone at their home is the most dangerous way to do it.

(25,126 posts)In the aftermath, the FBI initially chose the Smith & Wesson 1076 chambered for the 10mm Auto round, but its sharp recoil proved too much for most agents to control effectively, and a special reduced velocity loading was developed - commonly referred to as the "10mm Lite" or "10mm FBI". Soon afterwards Smith & Wesson developed a shorter cased cartridge based on the 10mm, the .40 S&W.[30] This became more popular than its parent due to the ability to chamber in standard frame semi-automatic pistols initially designed for the 9mm Parabellum.[citation needed]
Other issues were brought up in the aftermath of the shooting. Despite being on the lookout for two violent felons who were known to use firearms during their crimes, only two of the FBI vehicles contained shotguns (in addition to Mireles, McNeill had a shotgun in his car, but was unable to reach it before or during the shootout), and none of the agents were armed with a rifle. Only two of the agents were wearing ballistic vests, and the armor they were wearing was standard light body armor, which is designed to protect against handgun rounds, not the .223 Remington rounds fired by Platt's Mini-14 rifle. The other six agents involved in the stakeout in five vehicles, who did not reach the shootout in time to participate, did have additional weaponry including Remington shotguns, Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine guns, and M16 rifles.[11]

Although Miami had issues with drug related crimes, this shootout involved two redneck white guys.
In 1988, they made a movie about it. Watching it in 2011, I was shocked to see how the agents were armed. Unfortunately, this shootout changed law enforcement.
Shoot out starts at 36:56...the FBI was out gunned--Note agent's the revolver in the thumbnail...
