Ginni Thomas apologized to her husband's Supreme Court clerks after supporting the 'Stop the Steal' rally ahead of the Capitol riot
2 hours ago
Ginni Thomas apologized to the staff of her husband, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, for her support of the January 6 rally that turned into a deadly riot at the Capitol.
It's a rare heel-turn for the right-wing conspiracy theorist and stalwart Trump supporter.
Ginni Thomas, the prominent far-right conspiracy theorist and wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, apologized to her husband's clerks for her role in supporting the January 6 rally that turned into the deadly riot at the Capitol building.
"I owe you all an apology. I have likely imposed on you my lifetime passions," she said in an email obtained by The Washington Post.......................................

That story was debunked early on, but this "sudden" soft apology seems so random. Damage control before worse is uncovered?

(1,580 posts)They once answered false to a question about the underground railroad using those lawn jockey decorations to mark "stops". Snopes marked it for false saying that there were no "documented" historical evidence. But the study of history has evolved over the years to include oral history.
In this case the page states that the "rumor" came from the leader of talking points saying they funded 80 buses and she was once on the talking points board in 2019.

Chief Justice should have pressured Thomas to retire then.
I heard that Mrs. Thomas also might have helped fund some rioters' tranport to DC....

...........A sampling of posts made to the group were shared with The Washington Post by a member upset with some of the pro-Trump messages written by Ginni Thomas and others in the lead-up and aftermath of the election. Thomas did not respond to requests for comment. Several former clerks, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the listserv is private, verified the dispute in what is normally an affable setting meant to celebrate achievements of the clerk family.
Besides the friction there, Thomas has drawn outrage among liberals for public political commentary on her Ginni Thomas Facebook page. Her comments there celebrated Trumps supporters who assembled in D.C. on Jan. 6, hundreds of whom stormed the Capitol, resulting in the deaths of five people.
In the early morning post, Thomas encouraged her Facebook followers to watch the days events unfold on conservative news media, writing, LOVE MAGA people!!!!
She added in another: GOD BLESS EACH OF YOU STANDING UP or PRAYING.
Thomas later appended an apparent disclaimer that said, [Note: written before violence in US Capitol], according to Mark Joseph Stern of Slate.com, who first wrote about the posts. The Facebook account is no longer visible.
Additionally, there have been unfounded charges on social media that Ginni Thomas played a role in helping to pay for bus transportation for some of those attending the rally. Reporters at The Washington Post, the New York Times and elsewhere, including Stern, found those claims were false.

What bullshit. Hiring 80 buses filled with violent miscreants is offensive to her husbands employees? What fucking world does she live in where the real victims of January 6th are clerks of court?

"Apologizing" to the paid help means nothing. How about apologizing to President Biden? How about apologizing to the American people? Ginni Thomas can't be fired but her husband can be forced to resign.

(11,098 posts)As a general proposition, one spouse should not be responsible for the crazy things done by the other. (A rule upon which my wife insists.) We would at least hope that Justice Thomas did not participate in his wife's seditious actions. The rub is that we have known from the beginning that Justice Thomas is every bit as much the wingnut as his wife.
A judge or justice probably ought not be required to recuse from any given case because of the political activities of his or her spouse. A judge or justice should recuse from a case if there is the appearance of impropriety. However, I have no reason to believe that Justice Thomas holds himself to that standard. Unfortunately, there is no appeal from a Supreme Court justice's decision to not recuse.
Chemisse
(30,811 posts)think he should reside over activities related to his wife's 'passions' because of the potential for a conflict of interest. In the case of a spouse, or any close relative, there could be conflicting loyalties even if he did not endorse her actions.
TomSlick
(11,098 posts)Unfortunately, I would expect Justice Thomas' sense of propriety to be less well developed.

(11,566 posts)When a justices spouse financially supports an armed insurrection to assassinate the Vice President and Speaker of the House, overturn an election & overthrow the government, how could he possibly serve in any capacity? For all we know, Thomas, himself, may have been covertly supporting the insurrection. His reputation is damaged beyond repair and his wife belongs behind bars. Every day Justice Thomas remains on the Court is a cancer within the institution. He needs to go immediately!
