Biden Administration Will Ship COVID-19 Vaccines Directly To Pharmacies

Source: NPR

The Biden administration has announced that it will begin shipping about 1 million COVID-19 vaccine doses a week directly to thousands of pharmacies in an attempt to address equity concerns and speed up the country's crucial inoculation effort.

The vaccines sent to pharmacies will be in addition to the millions of doses sent weekly to states, territories and tribes and that are sometimes administered at local pharmacies.

The program will begin on Feb. 11 on a limited basis, with vaccines sent to about 6,500 stores nationwide, Jeff Zients, the White House's COVID-19 response coordinator, told reporters on Tuesday. He said that the effort would then scale up and that eventually up to 40,000 retail pharmacies, including Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid locations, would receive doses directly from the federal government.

Once the program starts, Zients said, those wishing to get vaccinated should follow their state's current eligibility requirements and, if eligible, then check with their local pharmacy to see if there is vaccine availability...

Fast action, widely distributed, the ripple effects will begin very soon. Biden Administration will be a case study on how to rapidly repair an inherited mess for maximum effect. In some respects, Trump neglected everything so much that the fixes were easily seen and while there was no distribution system, there were idle resources for someone who knows what he's doing.

Ohio Gov. DeWine's roll-out, so far, is a complete joke! Is there an outfit that will sit and repetitively try to access the registration apps by web page and/or phones (for the not too tech savvy?). Public Health Dept claims Giant Eagle and Kroger pharmacies will provide and register a slot based on the last group meeting 1b criteria but when contacted by phone, Kroger's said they got 100 shots per shipment; Giant Eagle got a few shots too, but registration is closed because of availability issues. No more slots were open at the open Public Health Dept vaccine clinic and no word on restock. No messages in the local hospital's app regarding availability either (one needs to sign up for their EMR for access to registration). Supposedly, the county's teachers can get it this weekend at one of our local suburban high schools in an effort to leave hybrid schedules and open schools - no mention of second shot time slots or the kids and their parents. Sooooo...over 70 year olds, with or without health issues, not so much!

Some time ago, some said it was like the Hunger Games - they are spot on!

Their roll-out has been better than ours in Arizona. Here my 87 yo husband still cannot get an appointment to get the first shot.

The plan, part of President Joe Biden's strategy to combat the outbreak, is intended to make it easier for Americans to get a vaccine in their communities, at local stores including Walgreens, Walmart and CVS.

Officials have conceded, however, that vaccine supply constraints mean there will be limited doses available when the scheme begins.
