House to vote tonight on leveling fines of up to $10,000 on lawmakers who flout security screening
Source: Washington Post
The House will vote Tuesday night on whether to penalize lawmakers who seek to bypass the security screening measures that have been enacted in the wake of the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, with offenders facing a $5,000 fine for the first offense and $10,000 each time thereafter.
Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), chairman of the House Rules Committee, defended the move in an impassioned floor speech in which he blasted the elitist mentality of those who have ignored the screening procedures, imploring his fellow lawmakers to recognize that the rules apply to us, too and its time all of us acted like it.
Apparently, some of my friends on the other side think differently, McGovern said. Some are acting as though by being elected to Congress, they have been anointed to some sort of special club one that gets to pick and choose what rules to follow.
Last month, metal detectors were installed outside some doors to the House chamber in a move aimed at tightening security in the wake of the deadly riot. Tense interactions between Republican lawmakers and U.S. Capitol Police soon followed.

(11,084 posts)The House has the constitutional authority to punish repeated violation of its behavior rules by expulsion. I generally dislike three strikes and you're out rules but this would be an exception.

(722 posts)...but there needs to be a provision that 'no member of Congress shall enter their chamber until all fines are paid'. Call it a modern day poll tax if you want, but if Florida can do the same with ex-felons, so should Congress.

(557 posts)Why can't one of the fines be to refuse them to walk through the door if this happens or suspend them for months. I do not understand. Why can't they be suspended since the Democrats hold the majority?

No citizen is allowed to bypass security procedures when entering other government buildings and no Congress member should be allowed to, either.

(7,270 posts)A number of similar policies were announced on the floor or in a press briefing very shortly after Jan 6th. I've been surprised to read these announcements currently reported. I guess it was simply announced that it was going to be done, but it took this long getting implemented.

(107,695 posts)The House of Representatives adopted a rule Tuesday to fine lawmakers who flout safety measures put in place after the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol last month.
The rule gives the Sergeant-at-Arms the authority to fine lawmakers $5,000 for a first offense and $10,000 on a second if the legislators do not complete the security screening to enter the house, which includes walking through a metal detector.
The new metal detectors were put at the House Chamber's entrance in the wake of the mob that stormed the Capitol, incited by former President Donald Trump. However, some Republican members openly ignored and balked at the screening in the days that followed.
"It is beyond comprehension why any Member would refuse to adhere to these simple, commonsense steps to keep this body safe," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement after the resolution passed Tuesday.
