Every US state will see below freezing temperatures over the next week
Source: CNN

(CNN)It's about to get so cold that boiling water will flash freeze, frostbite could occur within 30 minutes and it will become a shock to the system for even those who are used to the toughest winters.
The coldest air of the season will be diving south, not leaving anyone out. Every single state in the US -- including Hawaii -- will reach below freezing temperatures on Monday morning.
This includes 86% of the country and 235 million people, and one blast of arctic air is responsible for much of that.
This frigid cold is compliments of the polar vortex, a large area of low pressure located near the poles. During the winter months it breaks down, sending cold air that has been bottled up, southward. It can be responsible for extremely frigid temperatures and huge plunges of cold air.

(1,107 posts)Up here in north central WA about 20 miles from the border we have had the worst ice I've ever experienced in over 40 years for more four weeks. It's been rock hard, glaze ice. nothing has left a mark on it
No one has gone anywhere without chains, crampons, carbide spikes, or some form of traction device on our driveways, paths, and paddocks. Dogs have become terrified of the stuff, pigs have been skating and the sheep stay within 10 feet of their feeders.
The only ice I want to see for the next 9 months will be in my drinks!!

(408 posts)It has been nearly 60 here in Northern Wyoming the last couple of days. IN FEBRUARY when the temps are normally below 0. this morning we're getting a nice, wet snow. Big, damp flakes. hallelujah! We've had almost NO moisture this Winter so I can live with chilly temps for the next week. And FYI the coldest it is projected to be is -2 overnight next Monday. pfbbt. That's still shirt sleeve weather to most people around here.

(12,990 posts)Warm winters lead to more little beasties in the spring and summer. We need to have a good cold snap or else spring will be a never ending battle with ticks and fleas.

(53,206 posts)Though I really hate cold weather, this winter has been much too mild and nature becomes out of balance. I saw flies in December and January. I hadn't thought about the ticks and fleas in spring.

(938 posts)We're expecting three days of subzero highs. Not unusual around here this time of year. Still, I remember week long (or longer) stretches of subzero highs when I was a lot younger.
That said, I better get the grocery shopping done before the cold snap hits. Need to get stuff for soups and stews (and probably some hot cocoa mix, too).

(34,189 posts)I'm in North Florida, about ten miles south of the Georgia border and the forecast from the CNN link in the OP says: Monday, February 8th,
65° / 51° - Partly Cloudy
The National Weather Service forecast for Tallahassee is:
Sunday Night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 42.
Monday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 60.
Monday Night - Mostly cloudy, with a low around 48.
Maybe it will be below freezing in the western Panhandle of Florida, but I doubt they will be over ten degrees colder than here.
Tonight it may get down to 31 F but that is the only below freezing temperature forecast through next Tuesday. https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?x=213&y=145&site=tae&zmx=&zmy=&map_x=213&map_y=145

(60,144 posts)Over here, it's not supposed to go much below zero all of next week, and that's Celsius (32° F).
Maybe down south at higher elevations in the mountains, but up here, no frigid weather is expected.

Now, with climate change, any dip below 40-degrees is a headline event...

(20,332 posts)Bear in mind that, 40 yr ago, that wouldn't even have raised an eyebrow. NORMAL winters used to be -20 to -30F here regularly.
-15F for yearly lows is what states 300 miles south of us used to get. That's how far climate change has moved us.
