WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate Energy Committee voted 13-4 on Wednesday to approve the nomination of former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm to head the Energy Department.

Granholm, 61, wants to steer the department to help the United States compete with China on electric vehicles and green technologies like advanced batteries and solar and wind power. Senator John Barrasso, a Republican from fossil fuel producing Wyoming, expressed concerns that President Joe Biden’s push to curb climate change would threaten thousands of jobs in coal, gas and oil, and voted against Granholm.

All of the committee's seven Democrats, including Manchin and U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., voted for Granholm in the committee vote, as did its two independents, U.S. Sens. Angus King of Maine and Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

Four Republicans — Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Steve Daines of Montana, John Hoeven of North Dakota and Jim Risch of Idaho — also voted for Granholm's nomination. The four Republicans who voted against her were U.S. Sens. John Barrasso of Wyoming, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi and Mike Lee of Idaho.

Hey, ID = UT 'cause they're "both out west" per Michigan midwesterners.

Mayorkas and even he got some R votes.

Now that Graham's no longer chairman, Garland's nomination will proceed.
