WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear a bid by a consortium of energy companies seeking to seize land owned by the state of New Jersey to build a $1 billion natural gas pipeline.

The justices agreed to take up an appeal by PennEast Pipeline Company LLC, a joint venture backed by energy companies including Enbridge Inc, of a lower court ruling in favor of New Jersey’s government, which opposed the land seizure.

Other companies in the consortium for the 120-mile (190-km) pipeline from Pennsylvania to New Jersey include South Jersey Industries Inc, New Jersey Resources Corp (NJR), Southern Co and UGI Corp.

will simply grant the power of eminent domain to corporations. Gosh, I am sure there is no way that will ever go wrong.

it becomes a federal issue and since we have a change in administration the appropriate federal authorities may just see the need to reconsider the licensing on it, and thereby demand a stay of SCOTUS from ruling arbitrarily.

It seems to me that if they do rule for the corporations then that turns SCOTUS into the Government rather than the arbiter of government. A change in role which they may not wish to appropriate.

I suspect the court will not rule and instead uphold the lower court finding as below:

***********************
New Jersey opposed construction of the pipeline and did not consent to PennEast’s seizure of properties the state owns or in which it has an interest.
*******
The Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in 2019 that PennEast could not use federal eminent domain to condemn land controlled by the state.

Private entities have the right to seize land from states, that outrageous.

So called "renewable energy" depends on access to dangerous natural gas, and of course, we have plans here to trash the continental shelf with wind turbines, so there's definitely a market here.

It also goes through a part of PA where one can see a fair number of Trump flags right next to "Stop Penn East" signs.
