House to vote Thursday on removing Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from committee posts

Source: Washington Post

House Democrats plan to hold a vote Thursday on removing Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) from her two House committees after Republican leaders declined to do so on their own.

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) said in a statement that Democrats would move forward with the vote after discussions with Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) made clear that the GOP would not unilaterally move to strip Greene of her posts.

“I spoke to Leader McCarthy this morning, and it is clear there is no alternative to holding a Floor vote on the resolution to remove Rep. Greene from her committee assignments,” Hoyer said. “The Rules Committee will meet this afternoon, and the House will vote on the resolution tomorrow.” A spokesman for McCarthy said Wednesday that the GOP leader “will address this with members later today” at a 4 p.m. conference meeting.

Greene has become a symbol of rising extremism among the GOP’s pro-Trump base, having embraced the baseless QAnon ideology during her campaign for the House and suggesting in social-media videos taped before her election to Congress that mass shootings were “false flag” events staged by gun-control advocates. She has also made social media postings supporting calls for the assassination of prominent Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

It sets an incredible precedent like removing 60 votes needed for judges.

I think keeping her in the public eye is a winner but she’s not going anywhere - she’s a lock in the Georgia 14th for the foreseeable future

They let people like Steve King go on and on for years until his rhetoric intensified to the point of being maybe one notch below this nutjob and he was finally stripped of his committee assignments, and the voters finally got some sense and sent him packing.

She’ll have almost nothing to point to for accomplishments. I’m not sure how much that will matter though - this often overlooked part of the state has themselves a rockstar rep. Even if she hardly actually lives there.

the "all hat, no cattle" persona and whether that really brings any tangible benefits to the district other than silly but dangerous posturing.

6. They also need to vote to censure and then kick her ass out.

They could just start with kicking her ass out, and I'd be really happy about that.

Republicans would almost certainly expel one or more of ours, such as Ilhan Omar.

I was scanning around and there has been some past precedent for removals in general - https://www.legbranch.org/2018-8-15-removing-house-members-from-standing-committees/ (although in that case, it dealt with indictments but the article listed some other means via embedded links)

and texting with them, etc.

Will information be provided prior to the vote, within a motion? Will dems provide and discuss rationale for removal? Pelosi seemed to suggest that insurrectionists were helped from 'within'...time to clarify?

The pandora’s box of ideologically purging committees on a simple majority vote is a risk, and the GOP can’t even admit their plainly racist ideology, both demonstrated amply by recent GOP threats to modify any resolution against Greene to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar instead.

They have continually chipped away at what was "normal" societal behavior (which itself still allowed a wide range of aberrations) over the past 4 years, to the point where they have now completely upended the concept of decorum and respect, by promoting and encouraging the acceptance of extreme behavior for the entire body of elected officials at all levels.
