Militia alliance in Georgia signals new phase for extremist paramilitaries
Source: Atlanta Journal Constitution
We are going to see a lot of this coalition building with some pretty nasty actors, says one expert.
By Chris Joyner, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The leader of a private paramilitary group that provided security for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said he has formed alliances with other far-right groups to advocate for Georgias secession from the union, following the arrests of participants in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
The way patriots are now being hunted down and arrested by fellow men and women who have taken the same oath has disheartened any faith I had in the redemption or reformation of the USA as one entity, Justin Thayer, head of the Georgia III% Martyrs, said in a text exchange with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution this week.
Thayer said the Martyrs have allied themselves with fellow Three Percenter militia the American Brotherhood of Patriots and American Patriots USA (APUSA), a north Georgia group headed by Chester Doles, a Dahlonega resident who belonged to various racist and neo-Nazi hate groups before forming the new group in 2019. The combined groups will advocate for Georgias secession from the union through an amendment to the U.S. Constitution or through the collapse of the American experiment, Thayer said.
For the last 150 years, the Imperial Yankee culture of the northeast has been molding Georgia and the South in general into its perfect image, he said.

(3,495 posts)was the South's use of slave labor to keep its economy going and assist in the war effort. The Confederate army used impressed slaves to build fortifications and generally assist in operations, though slave owners didn't like it and often tried to skirt the government from "seizing" their slaves. Another reason the Emancipation Proclamation was just another war time decision to help end the Civil War as it was to express the basic foundations of the Republic ("all men are created equal" .

Somebody said its people making $40,000 a year who say raising the $7.25 minimum wage will destroy the economy.
The South is rising (economically), and thats what makes some people mad. They like people to stay in their place.

(2,412 posts)Yes we trained them. This what we in the Peace Movement call "Bringing the War Home!". They become accustomed to the violence of war and bring it home with them. This is an unintended consequence of our wars of choice abroad. These wars are expensive in more ways than just dollars!

(36,055 posts)Second, they misname their alliance & insult the meaning of "martyr" to hide their KKK intent.
No one fighting and dying to preserve white supremacy is a martyr.
They are liars, dividers and threateners.
They pretend to themselves that organizing for patriotism isn't cover for mayhem. MTG included.
Their pretenses hide their danger to Black people, rule of law and even themselves.
They are unconscious.

(6,129 posts)Democracy is a threat to white supremacy.
They are OK with democracy for whites, but not for all, and they can still keep a straight face and call that "democracy".
They're warped beyond repair.
And if they're slightly religious, they could be an even bigger threat IMHO.

(2,900 posts)...and if not; Id expect them to be shortly.
Keep the pressure on these extremist groups; their membership networks; funding sources; etc. -and do not relent in the slightest.
Let them feel the pressure; it will further increase the odds that they attempt to organize.
The first sign that a single law has been broken; pull them in and perp walk every single one of them.
Theres no room for this to gain any further foothold in this country. We already have an extremist group problem; we cannot allow it to get any further organized.

(9,988 posts)To help in that effort, Dems need to pass some new laws on domestic terrorism and outlaw citizen militias completely. All 50 states already have laws against citizen militias, but they obviously are not being enforced. The Second Amendment does not give militias the right to organize either (District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570, 621 (2008) (citing Presser v. Illinois, 116 U.S. 252 (1886)). In both decisions, the Supreme Court decided that the Second Amendment does not prevent the prohibition of private paramilitary organizations.
All 50 states prohibit private, unauthorized militias and military units from engaging in activities reserved for the state militia, including law enforcement activities. The militias tried some law enforcement by appearing at BLM protests to help the police and intimidate protesters, and they were allowed to get away with it. For the most part, though, they seem more intent on government tyranny. Right-wing writers and militias have used the argument that the Second Amendment gives them the right to organize to fight tyranny by the government, even though it clearly does not according to the opinions cited above.
Here is a link to an interesting Atlantic article from 2011 debunking the whole Second Amendment argument. Heres an interesting paragraph about the notion of insurrection that we certainly recognize today.
But that image of a Mad Max republic lives on in the fringes of the national imagination. It is what authors Joshua Horwitz and Casey Anderson call "the insurrectionist idea," the notion that the Constitution enshrines an individual right to nullify laws an armed citizen objects to. Its most prominent recent expression came from Senate candidate Sharon Angle, who predicted that if she was unable to defeat Democratic Sen. Harry Reid at the ballot box (which she couldn't), citizens would turn to "Second Amendment remedies"--in essence, assassination. Rand Paul also likes to hint that the remedy for rejection of his libertarian policies may be hot lead.
