President Biden's push for a $15 federal minimum wage appears to be on hold for now.
As part of a marathon session of voting on amendments to Biden's $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package, the Senate late Thursday app"A $15 federal minimum wage would be devastating for our hardest-hit small businesses at a time when they can least afford it," said Sen. Joni Ernst, a Republican from Iowa, who brought up the amendment.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., vowed to push forward on a phased increase, saying he never intended to increase the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour during the pandemic. The federal minimum has been $7.25 since 2009, but dozens of states and cities have a higher minimum wage.roved by voice vote a measure prohibiting an increase of the federal minimum wage during the global pandemic.

(15,325 posts)Even Sen Sanders voted NO.
Which is weird he caved, considering $15 min wage has been his campaign mantra since 2016.
Even the $15 he campaigned on was never imnediate. It was always a roll out over a few years.
Tho I never heard that part stated as he campaigned on it. Just $15 min wage without the talk of it being a roll out.
However, it is a bargaing item at this point & there is no doubt we will get to $15 as the big proposal gets taken apart & voted on.
This is one item that will take seperate arm twisting. And that is still to come.
They WILL get to $15 come hell or highwater.
It'll jest be done another way

(2,355 posts)And be done with this shit. That way it goes up like it should, and there would never be a need to bargain with or wait on the QOP to agree with us, ever again.

As you say..Tie It To Inflation

(15,325 posts)That is even better . Something has to change with how workers are paid.

(7,263 posts)it is fairly normal practice to roll out a Fed Min wage increase in increments over several years.
As far as I have read this time will be no different. A $7 an hour increase all at once would hurt small business. I would expect it to not be fully implemented until 2024 at the earliest.

(26,291 posts)I am not saying I oppose people getting paid more though because I think the do deserve better wages but on the other hand 15 an hour does not address the real problem which is employers allowing workers wages to stagnant for decades because companies have the choice to pay better but are not doing so.
A much better way then to improve wages might be via the corporate tax system by increasing the current rate to say 60% to 90% for companies earning more than 10 million a year.
Then granting them a tax break that is linked to the number of employees they have and temp as well as seasonal count towards the number.
The more employees they have inside the US that earn more than 500% over the federal poverty level then the lower the corporate taxes they pay.
