Trump shifted campaign donor funds into his heavily indebted private business after his election loss, report says
jzitser@businessinsider.com (Joshua Zitser) 51 mins ago
Former President Donald Trump has shifted money raised from campaign donors into the Trump Organization, according to documents from the Federal Election Committee (FEC) seen by Forbes.
He moved around $2.8 million into his private businesses throughout the duration of his presidency, Forbes's Dan Alexander reported.
Trump funneled an additional $81,000 into the Trump Organization after his election loss, the magazine said.
The payments were made public in the filings the campaign submitted to the FEC and were liest to cover costs including rent, airfare, lodging, and other expenses.
One of the campaign's joint-fundraising committees, associated with the Republican Party, also moved an estimated $4.3 million of donor money into his private business during his presidential term, according to Forbes.

(43,063 posts)That's an opportunity for Dems. Once announcing retirement, pledge to disburse funds to other Democratic candidates. Charities are rated for efficiency in the use of funds. Why not politicians?

(16,994 posts)They can go to a political party, someone elses campaign or a non-profit but they do not become yours. This is why people running for office loan their campaign money rather than donate to it. The loan is repayable but the donation is gone for good.

(31 posts)With leftover funds, former politicians can legally only use the money from campaign committees toward political or charitable purposes. They can:
Pay for winding-down costs
Donate the funds to a recognized charity
Donate to other politicians' campaign committees
Donate to party activity at the federal, state, or local level
Do nothing
But the organization he set up to collect money to fight his election loss was of a different kind, and he can spend that much more freely. Is that where this money came from?

(1,184 posts)My father ran for a state representative race back in the 90s and we had like 500 dollars left over. The county we were in did not have a veteran memorial at the county courthouse, so I helped my father and we put up a wall memorial in the courthouse.
We also had a concrete walkway put in for a civil war union war grave.
It's good to see that those funds were put to good use to see today.

(7,873 posts)IMO it is very likely there is much more that has gone offshore or underground into holding companies and other shell organizations belonging to Trump. That kind of self-dealing has been their ongoing business model. I suspect that much of it is illegal but is also difficult to stop because when used by drug cartels it is by design meant to obscure the transactions, cashflow, sources and ownership.

(18,619 posts)Catering, transportation, and rent for the campaign add up. No other candidate is uniquely positioned to pay himself like this. It could be worse, he could own a chain of jewelry stores.
Remember when Sarah Palin went on a shopping spree and filled the belly of a campaign jet with $50k worth of clothes for herself and her family? She returned them because those were the days the party still had scruples.
Former President Donald Trumps re-election campaign reportedly paid the Trump Organization $2.8 million of donor funds, $81,00 of which came after Trump lost the election. One campaign fundraising committee also paid his businesses $4.3 million between Jan. 20, 2017, and Dec. 31, 2020, including at least $331,000 in payments that arrived after the election, Forbes reports. According to Federal Election Commission filings, the money paid for lodging at Trump hotels, meals at Trump restaurants, and venue rentals at Trump properties. Trump himself did not donate his own money to the campaign.

(17,884 posts)of legislation to outlaw egregious acts no one thought anyone would do on basic ethical grounds and / or would be policed by the system itself through the press and the ballot box. When challenged, the system broke down. We can't rely on those better angels anymore. The only good thing about Trump is he's shown us exactly what needs to be patched up legally.

(17,884 posts)if the rubes are dumb enough to give their hard earned money to a well known crook, they get what they deserve. A pity this isn't illegal, but i have no sympathy for the "donors." This whole chapter will go down as the most embarrassing moment in American political history, when a huge chunk of our populace showed how incredibly stupid, weak and gullible they actually are. A laughing stock and rightly so.
