Majority of Americans say Trump should be convicted, barred from holding federal office in impeachment trial: POLL

The Senate is set to begin Trump's second impeachment trial on Tuesday.

With his impeachment trial set to begin this week, a narrow majority of Americans say they support the Senate convicting former President Donald Trump and barring him from holding federal office again, according to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll released Sunday.

Compared to public attitudes in the early days of his first impeachment trial, support for the Senate convicting Trump is higher now. In an ABC News/Washington Post poll published in late January 2020, when the first trial was ongoing but before senators had voted, 47% of Americans said the Senate should vote to remove Trump from office and 49% said he should not be removed.

But in this latest poll, 56% of Americans say Trump should be convicted and barred from holding office again, and 43% say he should not be. The new poll was conducted by Ipsos in partnership with ABC News using Ipsos' KnowledgePanel.

Meanwhile, the attention on Capitol Hill last week focused more on the fate of a new Republican member of Congress who has faced backlash for espousing extremist views and support for the QAnon conspiracy theory in her past. That focus, which followed the deadly insurrection on the U.S. Capitol that Trump is accused of inciting, seems to have taken a toll on the public's perception of the party. By a 17-point margin, Americans say there are more radical extremists within the GOP than the Democratic Party.

2. That's good, it's a pretty firm barrier to him running let alone stealing another election

Democrats performed well in 2018 and 2020. How much upside can there be for a two time vote loser, twice impeached, with an insurrection and covid hung around his neck?

5. Such a low number of Yesses...What is wrong with USA citizens?

If they are starting to feel pity for the monster they should not, because the monster would never feel pity for anyone, if he saw anyone bleeding on the ground begging for help he would just walk past them making sure he doesn't stain his shoes.

Very disappointing to see such a low number of yesses and such a large number of no's, even if the yesses are higher.

Ignorance has taken over the USA, Biden should work very hard to revive education, to promote reading, the new education secretary must enhance the reading requirements for kids of all ages. They must read biographies of great leaders, Theodore Roosevelt, FDR, Bill Clinton, Obama...Its not that I am biased, but it is hard to find a good republican leader other than Teddy Roosevelt, and maybe Lincoln.

Kids must be forced to read Kurt Vonnegut, Sinclair Lewis, Science Fiction, George Orwell, and other literature to help them understand that there is good and evil and they must be able to recognize both so that when they are older they can make sound decisions. trump is the product of ignorance.

When I was a kid they would give us reading assignments and then we had to discuss the books in class, we had to write essays to explain our understanding of what we had just read, we were even taken to the school theatre to watch movies where we would have a forum right after the film to explain what we understood about it, they promoted analytical thought, they wanted kids to have independent thought. No matter what you understood you were never ridiculed if others thought you were wrong, that needs to start happening in schools today, kids must be able to think, they must be taken off the smart phones and the TV.

56% is a very disappointing number, especially considering the insurrection of January 6th. What on earth are the 43% thinking? I find little comfort in those numbers.

And yes I agree, it is hard to find a good republican leader. I'd have to say that Eisenhower could be included though. Even Ike couldn't stand Richard Nixon!

His main income stream would be seriously impacted. He would be forced to create a new way to grift.

10. I'm Amazed That 43% Feel Trump Should Not Be Convicted An Barred From Office

It is like having a video of someone pulling a gun in an argument and shooting the other person several times and then having the jury vote not guilty after viewing the tape. It makes no sense.
