German prosecutors have charged a 100-year-old man with 3,518 counts of accessory to murder on allegations he served during the second world war as a Nazi SS guard at a concentration camp on the outskirts of Berlin.
The man is alleged to have worked at the Sachsenhausen camp between 1942 and 1945 as an enlisted member of the Nazi partys paramilitary wing, said Cyrill Klement, who led the investigation of the centenarian for the Neuruppin prosecutors office.

(29,742 posts)I'm glad this nazi will finally get justice, but it's a travesty that he lived all these years without consequence. Is it wrong to hope that he lived in fear of apprehension all these years?

(20,769 posts)About near-centenarians being prosecuted for WW2 crimes. However, the SS did not conscript it's members. Those who served were willing volunteers for the job of being the enforcement arm of the Nazi party.
The Waffen SS was a partial exception.
"After the war, in the Nuremberg Trials, the Waffen-SS was condemned as a criminal organisation owing to its essential connection to the Party and its involvement in war crimes and the Holocaust, however Waffen-SS conscripts sworn in after 1943 were exempted from the judgement owing to their involuntary servitude."
