National Republicans donate $250,000 to Newsom recall effort
Source: LA Times
National Republicans donated a quarter-million dollars to the effort to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom, a notable injection of funds as the campaign enters the final month to gather enough valid signatures to put the matter on the ballot.
Backers of the recall say the cash infusion shows the growing confidence that the recall will qualify for the ballot and the increasing national attention being paid to the effort.
Its now on the national scene, as it well should be, said Anne Dunsmore, campaign manager for Rescue California, one of the groups leading the effort. Everybody should be on notice they cant run over their citizens with poor policy. I think its a very good sign. We welcome their activity.
The Republican National Committees donation to the California Republican Party, first reported by Politico, will be used on digital and texting programs to send links to the recall petition to GOP voters.

Why are the same folks who helped fund the QAnon conspiracy fueled insurgency now pouring money into a 2021 recall in California with about a year before the 2022 Gubernatorial election? Simple. Republicans hate democracy and turnout and the only chance they have of winning a Statewide election in a diverse California is to underwrite a recall campaign less than a few months before campaigning begins for the 2022 election.

Unseating Newsom, however, will be far more difficult. The state GOP was on the ropes in 2016 when Trump was elected. Only 26% of the states voters were registered Republicans, and Hillary Clinton beat Trump by 4.2 million votes in California. Now, the state partys registration has slid down to 24% and Joe Biden beat Trump by
5.1 million votes.
Still, a potential recall vote, being a special election sometime this fall, poses a threat to Newsom, so his campaign consultants are busily preparing for a battle. Although this is a heavily Democratic state, parts of California are as red as the most MAGA-embracing counties in the South. Indeed, Trump received more votes in California 6 million than in any other state.
The recall consultants are focusing on the red precincts that run down the Central Valley, through the Inland Empire and up through increasingly blue San Diego and Orange counties. Theyre targeting households with at least one registered Republican, preferably two, or with a second voter without a party preference, said Dave Gilliard, a veteran consultant who is working on the recall and helped place the 2003 recall of Gov. Gray Davis on the ballot.
Newsom is no Gray Davis, who was ousted by Arnold Schwarzenegger in that recall. A new poll shows a majority of Californians have a favorable view of Newsom despite the havoc wreaked by the pandemic on the economy and the lives of schoolchildren and their parents.

(599 posts)The GOP have to pull this bullshit because they will never get a gop candidate to win a general election.
This recall will fail because people havent forgotten the mess that Arnold left the state in.

(32,020 posts)when Schwarzenegger was re-elected, an aberration in an otherwise strong year for Democrats nationally.
The Republican candidate for governor could not even reach 40% of the popular vote in 2018. The Democrat has always had 60%+ of the presidential vote in California since 2008.
Although California's first state government in 1850 was controlled by Democrats, Republicans made gains in the state during the Civil War. Republicans then controlled California politics beginning in the 1890s Progressive Era through the 1950s (even though Californians voted for FDR for president during the Depression). By the 1960s, the state legislature flipped to a (D) majority, but in a time when agriculture and defense - which are traditional Republican bases - were still major employers in CA, Republicans were still able to win gubernatorial and presidential elections - California voted for Republican governors four straight times in 1982, '86, '90, and '94 and every Republican presidential candidate from '72 to '88.
Once the Cold War ended, California began losing many aerospace jobs that were tied to the defense industry - and with those jobs went Republican voters. Living in CA I often hear that Proposition 187 permanently damaged the state Republican Party's image among Latinos. But looking at California's history and how many military bases/aerospace companies used to be in the state, I think another factor was the decline in defense industry jobs here.

(12,212 posts)COVID was tough on everyone, and too many people want to focus blame. Newsom will be the fall guy for that.
I even see the L.A. Times standing in line for punches at Newsom. The media loves this kind of thing.
It all depends on who the GOP chooses. Last week, I saw the Mayor of San Diego announce himself as a contender. I think he would be a fail vs. Newsom, though.
So, I have a feeling the GOP is working on finding another celebrity (like Schwarzenegger vs. Gray Davis bout) to do their dirty work.

(7,715 posts)Newsom is a bit down now. I think time is on his side, as things will get better on COVID. However, the California RWNJs are very determined to get him out. We should be determined to keep him.
As another poster noted, Newsom picks Senatorial replacements, and Dianne Feinstein's age has to be factored in. Her seat MUST remain Democratic, no matter what.
This isn't coming out of nowhere. Also, note that Governor Cuomo in NY is under a fierce attack.
We need to be just as fierce.

(92,187 posts)the odds are very much with us that a Democrat will win regardless
This is the third recall attempt by the rethugs. The other two didnt get enough signatures, but because a judge extended the time to get signatures, and the low threshold California has it will make it on the ballot this time
The jackasses will have wasted 100 million dollars for an election that will be run again in Nov 2022
If Newsom is recalled, a vote for governor will then happen. All this will happen in a special election at the end of the year, and then another election for governor will happen in nov 2022
I really hate the rethugs
Keep in mind we have strong Democratic legislators in both houses

(92,187 posts)time to get those signatures, unfortunately it will be on the ballot in a special election near the end of the year.
This is the third time r/w has tried to recall Newsom. It failed previously because they didnt have enough signatures. They asked for an extension, and a judge unfortunately authorized it
If the recall passes, which is a big if, there will be another election for governor
In that election there will be Democrats and republicans running
Whoever wins that election will vote nay be governor at most for one year, at which time there will be another election for governor
They will have wasted 100 million for this republican bullshit that the state cannot afford because of the fires and pandemic
This is due to republican R/W bullshit from San Bernardino county, and out of state rethugs
As long as LA county and the SF nay area vote, we will win
The one thing that can mess that up if the recall is successful, is if we have too many candidates like they did with Gray Davis, where most of those candidates were a joke, and the votes got split and Arnold Schwarzenegger got in. He left the state in terrible financial straights, and it took Jerry Brown to clean it up

(7,715 posts)This gives me hope that Gavin will survive all of this.
That being said, we need to get Ds everywhere to vote if this does have legs.
Rs win election now by voter suppression, gerrymandering, outright cheating, smearing, and recalls in places where their RWNJs aren't in the majority.

(92,187 posts)Regardless, we have to get the vote out in LA and SF Bay Area especially, and we will win
