DALLAS (AP) Snow and ice blanketed large swaths of the U.S. on Sunday, prompting canceled flights, making driving perilous and reaching into areas as far south as Texas Gulf Coast, where snow and sleet were expected overnight.
Typically, we just dont have quite this much cold air in place that far south, said Marc Chenard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Services Weather Prediction Center.
The storm has prompted officials in Houston, where temperatures were in the 70s (20s Celsius) earlier this week, to advise residents to prepare for power outages and hazardous roads that could be similar to those experienced in the wake of a Category 5 hurricane.
As rain fell Sunday in the Houston area, the temperature hovered near freezing. This rain will be transitioning over to just freezing rain, sleet and snow during the overnight through early morning hours tomorrow, said National Weather Service meteorologist Josh Lichter.

Yesterday -

This morning -

As a weather hobbyist, the 1983 and 1989 freezes are often most talked about but this current one seems worse in terms of the sheer temperatures.
I heard early this morning that they were doing rolling blackouts (of all times) in Houston metro.

(17,184 posts)Yes, we have been having rolling blackouts. Theres snow everywhere.
Yall can have this shit! I hate it. We are wimps. Its desperation, destruction and death for areas not used to having to deal with it. Its not pretty and its not fun. There are homeless people out in this, and animals are freezing to death.

(167,106 posts)There are people who are "snow lovers" but I am not one of them.
As a kid, we went through a period with little or no snow here in Philly - particularly when it would have been meaningful for sledding or building snowmen, etc. And by the time we did start getting it again, we had a number of years of significant hits and by then, I was an adult having to drive it in and perennially dig my car out of 4ft glacial plow-walls that would encase it on the driver's side when parked on the street (no garage).
They tease us (and this is actually something that happens in other cities too) about this sort of thing -

When it gets within a certain threshold of cold here in Philly, the city enacts what they call a "Code Blue" to bring the homeless into temporary shelter locations. I was reading a couple Houston area news sites this morning and saw they were handing out blankets. That's ridiculous when temps are in the teens and single digits.

(21,119 posts)but I don't think this house is very well insulated. The thermostat is set at 66° but it's 51° upstairs! It's supposed to get up above freezing tomorrow. I already spoke with my boss (we had today off) and told him I may not be in until afternoon.
As for the snow, we had enough stick to the ground for the neighbor's kids to play in it.
