Fauci Awarded $1 Million Israeli Prize For 'Speaking Truth To Power' Amid Pandemic
Source: NPR
America's top infectious disease official Dr. Anthony Fauci received a prestigious $1 million Israeli prize Monday, along with six other researchers who shared two additional $1 million prizes for their contributions to health and medicine.
The Dan David Prize, affiliated with Tel Aviv University, said it honored Fauci for his career in public health and "speaking truth to power" during the politicized COVID-19 crisis.
Fauci "is the consummate model of leadership and impact in public health," the awards committee said in a statement.
The award sets aside 10% of the prize money for academic scholarships in each winner's field. Fauci gets to determine the nature of the scholarships.

(128,905 posts)I doubt he can directly accept that due to it being "a gift" more than $50. Think "Hatch Act".

I would expect he would have it donated all towards scholarships/fellowships, etc.

(1,920 posts)From your link (bolded emphasis mine):
* gifts based on a personal relationship when it is clear that the motivation is not his official position;
* gifts of $20 or less per occasion, not to exceed $50 in a year from one source (note: this exception does not apply to gift cards, certificates and promotional codes that function as cash, although it does apply to those redeemable only at limited places, for example only at one store or at a group of affiliated stores such as those in a particular shopping center;
* discounts and similar benefits offered to a broad class, including a broad class of government employees;
* most genuine awards and honorary degrees, although in some cases an employee will need a formal determination;
* free attendance, food, refreshments and materials provided at a conference or widely attended gathering or certain other social events which an employee attends in his official capacity, with approval; and
* gifts based on an outside business relationship, such as travel expenses related to a job interview.
This might fall under the "genuine award" category, and therefore exempt from the rules. Dr. Fauci would still probably make very good decisions on its use.

(128,905 posts)For example, say if he were to work with a HHS-contracted vendor to produce a Public Service campaign (like for using masks or for the COVID-19 vaccines) that includes various video/audio spots along with posters/web ads, etc., and some or all of the material gets nominated for and wins a Clio Award (which are awards for commercials/advertising) and the award is for "Partnerships & Collaborations". The vendor would be the main recipient but since he would have perhaps been the main feature in the ads, he probably would have been given a nod and a statue for the work.
It would be similar to President Obama (along with Michelle) who had been awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, an Emmy, an Oscar, and a Grammy. And in his case with that Nobel Peach prize, he donated the whole $1.4 million kit and caboodle (because can you imagine if he kept it?) - https://www.reuters.com/article/us-obama-donation/obama-gives-1-4-million-nobel-prize-to-10-charities-idUSTRE62A5EN20100311
