Maine Republican Party To Consider Censuring Susan Collins Over Impeachment Vote

Source: huff post

POLITICS 02/16/2021 12:39 am ET

The Maine Republican Party is considering censuring Sen. Susan Collins (R) over her vote this month to convict former President Donald Trump, according to several media reports.

Local GOP officials are set to meet on Monday to discuss how to handle Collins’s vote after she was among seven Republicans to join all 48 Senate Democrats and two independents in calling for the conviction of Trump for his role in inciting the deadly mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol last month. The 57-43 vote, however, was 10 short of the required two-thirds majority for the conviction to stand.

“My vote in this trial stems from my own oath and duty to defend the Constitution fo the United States,” Collins added in a statement after Saturday’s vote. “The abuse of power and betrayal of his oath by President Trump meet the constitutional standard of ‘high crimes and misdemeanors,’ and for those reasons I voted to convict Donald J. Trump.”

Other Republican senators have already been penalized by party members for their votes to convict Trump. The North Carolina GOP unanimously voted to censure Sen. Richard Burr on Monday, and Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy was censured by his state party shortly after the vote.

Is this how they are going to swing the GOP? Push the states to censure anyone who doesn’t support their lord and savior?

They are following someone who lost them the presidency, house and senate. Hopefully their stupidity will make them lose some state and local races also.

You'd think so at the outrage these republicans across the country are acting. Like she's committed blasphemy, or downloaded kiddie porn.

I'll never understand these republicans. No one acted like this when Hillary lost. We didn't fly our flags upside down or leave up billboards in the yard. We didn't make death threats to people who didn't absolutely love Clinton.

For a month all we heard was 1st Amendment! Free speech!

Then when members of the party screaming for free speech use it, those same dimwits censure their own for using free speech!

Free speech - just another Amendment to be amended by the Republicans when they can. Except for Number 2! And isn't that number a prime example for what that amendment stands for? Gotta keep "Number 2" in the ReQublican Party where it belongs.

repugs are enemies of Democracy. They made America. I don't believe the party can be turned around. Any decent republicans that are left should change to the Democratic Party or start a new third party immediately.

This says it all. This is what the republican party has become and what they will stoop to to hold onto power. It isn't about making our country a better place to live, it's about holding onto power. I am a firm strong democrat but have always had respect for the rep party but not any more. They have become the party of self seeking lunatics. They are disgusting. How they even can justify putting someone like DJT and others like him in office says it all!!

If GOP in Maine were to censure Collins, could she retaliate by switching parties? And if she did, would she remain a Senator, and now Democrats would have the majority by 51-49???

He was re-elected as a Republican in 2000, but switch to an independent, caucusing with the Democrats. He was replaced by Senator Sanders in Jan 2007.
