Cotton, Romney introduce bill pairing minimum wage increase with tighter citizenship verification

Republican Sens. Tom Cotton (Ark.) and Mitt Romney (Utah) announced on Tuesday that they will be introducing a bill that would increase the minimum wage while also requiring employers to verify the immigration status of workers.
Millions of Americans are struggling to make ends meet. Im introducing a bill with @SenTomCotton that would increase the minimum wage while ensuring businesses cannot hire illegal immigrants. We must protect American workers, Romney tweeted.

Congress hasnt raised the minimum wage in more than a decade, leaving many Americans behind, Romney continued. Our proposal gradually raises the minimum wage without costing jobs, setting it to increase automatically with inflation, and requires employers to verify the legal status of workers.
Cotton added in a tweet that the wage increase in his and Romneys bill would not go into effect until after the pandemic has ended. The bill would also include protection for small businesses, according to Cotton.

(5,117 posts)I say start with all their own industries. Whenever I read about ICE raiding some sweatshop or the like, I do not recall the people responsible for having illegal immigrants working for them as being anything but registered rethugs. Of course, this little tidbit seldom comes out in the story, unless the person has democratic affiliations, but hey, 'They took our jerbs!' (We won't go into the fact that very few Americans will take 'menial' jobs because of the perceived social failure, yet they all want the services and products these jobs offer. Yet another example of the accepted belief that they should get something for nothing).

(3,299 posts)When weren't employers required to verify the immigration status of workers? The problem isn't that the restrictions didn't exist, it is that weren't enforced against employers.
As far as "protections for small businesses," that sounds like a loophole. 2025. for 15 dollar minimum wage? give me a break.
The title is overbroad. You don't have to be a "citizen" to work in the US.

(22,112 posts)particular session of Congress, if not acted on (voted), they die.
Can they pretty well be resubmitted again, as originally written, by the new session of Congress? That is, Bill ABC passed originally by Pelosi (not acted on by McConnell), died when the last session of Congress expired (pre-Biden), and a new session of Congress, resubmitted bill ABC again, but this time around, the resubmitted bill ABC could be passed into law (if signed)?

Once Biden's comprehensive immigration overhaul becomes law, "illegal" workers won't even be a second thought.

(12,531 posts)and if we truly want LEGAL immigration then that should be the MAIN focus. People wouldnt come here if they knew people wouldnt hire them.
Businesses need to be finally punished for doing it. And not some slap on the wrist. REAL punishment.

(20,174 posts)American citizens don't want to do? Over half our agricultural workers are undocumented. American citizens don't want to do seasonal, back breaking work with no benefits or job security.
I worked for a commercial landscaping company. Starting pay was $10 hour or higher, depending on experience. They got overtime in the warm months. Our workers got regular paychecks with taxes withheld. They got a W2 in January. They all had ID and a Social Security card, but I was forbidden to check and see if they were valid. Some did have green cards. Why? We would gladly hire American citizens that spoke English, but there just aren't many of those folks who want to mow lawns in the hot August sun.
I dare Congress to pass a law that requires E-Verify, but they won't because it's considered "anti-business".

(367 posts)Mitt gave all his Father's money to BYU and then went to Miami to meet with exiled El Salvadorians to get money to fund the start-up for Bain Capital. They were literally the same people running the death squads in El Salvador. The murder/rape of four nuns. The murder of Arch Bishop Romero while conducting Mass.
Also for those that support the troops remember that when asked why his children were not in any of the US Service Branches Mitt's reply was: "That his children had better things to do with their lives."
Look up Bain Capital's closing American companies and shipping the jobs overseas. Mitt is not a great human being!!!

(50,554 posts)"They should enforce the laws already on the books."
A couple problems here:
First, we already have laws on the books to prevent illegal immigrants from being hired. The reason they can be hired is rich Republicans love cheap labor so much they're willing to spend money to buy fictitious paperwork for them.
Second, the Cotton-Romney Act is written so the wage increase doesn't go into effect until the pandemic is over. This means the pandemic will go on as long as it has to, and it has to go on long enough to put a Republican Congress and Administration back in so they can repeal this law on the first day.
Third, I don't have the bill text in front of me, but I'm certain there are enough poison pills in it that no sane Democrat would ever vote for it. When we don't, the entire right-wing media apparatus will start screaming about how Democrats don't really support a minimum wage increase but do support illegal immigrants stealing Americans' jobs.

Uh huh. Who decides when the pandemic has ended? Them?
It's just stupid. It's tinged with fascism, requiring work papers of every worker. You need a damned passport to fly between states. Need papers to work. Soon you'll need identity papers to present to any cop that demands them (you kinda have to do that already.)
Well, this is a bill going nowhere. Throw it in the circular file. They are jerking us. Romney: Once a Repub, always a Repub, and he isn't getting elected Pres. What a waste of time.
