Rush Limbaugh, Talk Radio's Conservative Provocateur, Dies at 70
Source: New York Times
Rush Limbaugh, the relentlessly provocative voice of conservative America who dominated talk radio for more than three decades with shooting-gallery attacks on liberals, Democrats, feminists, environmentalists and other moving targets, died on Wednesday. He was 70.
His wife, Kathryn, announced the death at the beginning of Mr. Limbaughs radio show.
I know that I am most certainly not the Limbaugh that you tuned in to listen to today, she said before adding that Mr. Limbaugh had died of lung cancer that morning.
He had announced on his show last February that he had advanced lung cancer. A day later, President Donald J. Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nations highest civilian honor, during the State of the Union address.

I immediately clamped my hands over my mouth, hoping that God had missed that. But, as He is pretty quick, I figured I should utter a prayer asking for forgiveness (it was, admittedly, a short one).

(89,197 posts)That bastard singlehandedly turned the industry I loved (and was so proud and grateful to be a small part of) into a roiling cesspool of hate, division, and prideful resentment.
He made hate, intolerance, and selfishness cool and out in the open, and profitable. He gave cover and legitimacy and justification to that foul inner snake pit we all battle in the deepest parts of our worst and most resentful moments (what Mom & Dad and the nuns and wise teachers and role models and all those other human guideposts in our lives tried to teach us to rise above and be better than) and made those monsters okay to come out of the closet where theyd remained rightfully suppressed. A permanent blight on broadcasting.

Are you stuck living in 1985? Jesus Christ what an awful thing to say.
You just missed an opportunity to excoriate Limbaugh's demonization of the LGBTQ community. Yet chose to stigmatize people living with HIV.
Leave this one to the professionals to sort out.

yellowdogintexas
(23,598 posts)Despite my DU name, I am not a true Texan and I put beans in my chili
1 pound lean ground beef (or more if you want a lot)
Southwestern spices to taste
salt and black pepper
onions and garlic
Minced peppers (your choice of bell, poblano, Anaheim, jalapeno, serrano. If you can get Hatch so much the better) one jalapeno, 1 or 2 serrano and a poblano make a good combo if you enjoy heat; if not you can use just poblano which have a wonderful taste.
If you can't find the fresh peppers you can use a can or two of the minced mild or hot peppers
Red Wine about 1/2 cup (NOT cooking wine; if you won't drink it don't cook with it)
Water as needed
At least 1 can diced tomatoes (I use 2 and if I want to stretch it I use 3)
Canned beans rinsed and drained (we prefer black beans) At least 2 cans
Minced cilantro (optional, of course)
Brown ground beef with onions and garlic
Sprinkle the dry spices of your choice over the meat to your taste and stir them in throughly. We like it spicy so take that into consideration. (chili powder, cumin, cayenne, paprika) We like lots of cumin.
Cover the meat in water and let it cook down. Do this twice
Add: minced peppers of your choice
Bell pepper, mild chiles such as poblano; hotter such as jalapenos, serrano. I use jalapeno, serranos and poblano. Poblano has such a nice taste - they are the peppers used for Chiles Rellenos or stuffed peppers.
Add tomatoes, ( I use two) and enough water to yield the consistency of soup.
This is optional but I throw in 1/2 cup or so of red wine. The red wine really boosts the dish
Bring to a boil then reduce to low & simmer
Rinse and drain black beans and add to the pot. I use 2 of these.
Simmer until you have the consistency you want. Add water if needed.
When you are ready to eat, mince up cilantro if you like it.
Sometimes I will put shredded Mexican blend cheese on top.
It is delicious over rice.
It makes about 4 to 5 quarts, depending on tomatoes and beans

Mix in soda crackers
Raw cut onions (Make someone else do it because you'll need those tears when you run out of this chili)
Add onions on top
Black pepper
Sprinkle until you feel like you've gone too far

Eat with lots of cold beer.............keep going on both until gone.

Rush Limbaugh, who deployed comic bombast and relentless bashing of liberals, feminists and environmentalists to become the nations most popular radio talk-show host and lead the Republican Party into a politics of anger and obstruction, died Feb. 17 at 70.
The cause was complications from lung cancer, his wife, Kathryn Limbaugh, said at the start of his Wednesday radio show.
In February 2020, Mr. Limbaugh, a cigar aficionado who long defended tobacco use, told his audience that he had been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. One night later, then-President Donald Trump broke with tradition and bestowed on him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nations highest civilian honor, during the State of the Union address.
He is the greatest fighter that you will ever meet, Trump said.
For more than two decades, starting in the late 1980s, Mr. Limbaugh dominated the airwaves, inspiring a generation of conservative talk show hosts and politicians. He parlayed his popularity on the radio into stints as a TV commentator, football analyst on ESPN and best-selling author of incendiary political books.

I know that I am most certainly not the Limbaugh that you tuned in to listen to today, she said. I, like you, very much wish Rush was behind this golden microphone right now. She added, It is with profound sadness I must share with you directly that our beloved Rush, my wonderful husband, passed away this morning due to complications from lung cancer. She did not say where he died.
Mr. Limbaugh had announced on his show last February that he advanced lung cancer. A day later, President Donald J. Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nations highest civilian honor, during the State of the Union address.
Mr. Limbaugh soon resumed his broadcasts, and his adoration for Mr. Trump. As the Covid-19 pandemic swept the nation, he likened the coronavirus to the common cold. And in October, as Election Day neared and Mr. Trump recuperated from the virus himself, he joined Mr. Limbaugh on the air for a two-hour virtual rally, largely devoted to his grievances.

My kids begged and pleaded....PLEEEEESE buy us some orange juice... nope.
That went on for about a year till they got rid of Rush as their spokesman. We celebrated with Florida orange juice.
This morning when I sent them the news he'd died they messaged: Can we have orange juice now? They are in their late 30s and early 40s. Some lessons stick.

(382 posts)I first heard him in the 80's and was shocked they had him on the radio. His program was heard all over the country in big cities and small towns as the company that syndicated his show bought out hundreds, if not thousands, of stations. He was the personification of hate radio. Don't know if there is a hell, bit he belongs there.

(1,716 posts)I lived in Sacramento when Rush first started his show so I can say I heard the first broadcast of his show. For a while people were trying to figure out if the show was satire making fun of conservatives or for real. Of course once he went national and started getting paid the big bucks it was obvious he was just an ass and a blowhard. I don't have anything good to say about because in my opinion there was nothing good about him. Not afraid to say I am glad he is gone.

(218 posts)I am a year older than Rusty his nickname when we we younger. The last time I talked to him was almost 50 years ago. A few memories of our childhood follow. He was not always like he became.
We grew up a few blocks from each other in Cape Girardeau Mo. His house's driveway was big and had a basketball goal that the kids in the neighbor hood played on a lot. His mother lots of times would have snacks and ice tea when we took breaks.
Neither one of us were very good at basketball.
He wanted at an early age to be a radio D-Jay. His parents bought him recording equipment and he had a "studio" in the basement. I remember several times during our junior high school years being in the basement in his "studio". He would have written a radio skit with several parts and kids in the neighborhood would take this or that part. He took a few parts and did the sound effects. He would then cut and spliced together and we would listen to the "broadcast". I thought he was creative and talented in his efforts
We were both in boy scouts troop 3. He dropped out after he got chigger bit after our first camping trip. I got the Eagle Scout badge and God and Country award.
He was the class clown in high school and shy around woman.
Our families went to the same church. Back then both our parents insisted the family attended Sunday School and the Church Service. No excuses. His mother and my mother both sang in the church choir and are both deceased.
His family was always Republican my family Democrats. Political discussions were more civilized back then. His Grandfather was a Teddy Roosevelt Republican and I liked and admired his Grandfather. His dad was different. I remember Rusty and I while being on the debate team in high school sought his dad's opinions one season. You had to argue the affirmative and negative sides of the debate topic. His dad left me with the impression that his opinion was always right and if you disagreed with him you were not only wrong but you did not have a functioning brain. Not good advice for an aspiring debater.
His family wanted him to attend college and law school and follow in his Grandfather's, Dad's and Uncle's steps and be an attorney. He dropped of college and never attended law school like his younger brother. I believe he attended SEMO because they started a college radio station and he got to broadcast the late show. My last memory was helping him while he broadcast. I would get records from the stacks for him to play. I had to spend more time on my studies and being on the college debate team took a lot of time so I quit fetching records. I do not remember if it was 1 or 2 or 3 semesters before he flunked or dropped out. He moved and I moved and our paths never crossed again.
I thought one day I would call into his show and give him my opinion on whatever but then I never did. He had become too different. I think the pursuit of money and power and fame corrupted him. As a kid growing I thought he was shy and did not have a lot of self confidence. From the movie Dances with Wolves I recall the line "It is not good to talk about dead people" but then here I am "talking".
Rusty used to be my friend but he did a lot to divide this nation by preaching hate to his ditto heads and for that I can not forgive him. That is all. Perhaps I should not post this but then ... DING DONG the witch is dead.

(669 posts)No disrespect intended to those who do, but...
Even if his lung cancer was extremely painful and caused agony, it wasn't enough. This man was so loathsome, so foul, so hideous, vile, and disgusting that karma can't possibly cover the torments this piece of shit deserves. Unless there is an after-life or reincarnation where he can suffer excruciatingly and publicly (and I've seen no evidence that there is), then karma isn't going to cut it. Outside of murderers, rapists, and abusers, he is the lowest form of life...and he probably belongs in at least one of those camps too. The world is a better place now that he's gone, but it's a decidedly worse place because he was here at all.
My interest now will be in the right wing messaging. Rush was extremely talented (while being evil to the core) in his ability to spin anything and everything and to come up with the bullshit the other right wing hacks parroted. Hannity, Ingraham, Carlson, Coulter, et al, seemed to take most of their cues from crap he conjured. There is going to be a struggle to be the next Rush, but most of these people aren't smart or clever enough. Their only real talent is to amplify someone else's nonsense. Here's hoping I'm right and this particular brand of evil dies as none of the current adherents are smart enough to keep it going.
Last, I've said this once before (Bin Laden), and I will say it for Kissinger, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Trump as well when they finally go: Go fuck yourself Rush. I'm glad your dead.
I would only add that there is something wrong when people like rush aren't relegated to living in a van down by the river. Rewarding people $$ for being so cruel, vile, and disgusting shouldn't be a way to make a multi-million $$ living.
Oh, and fuck you rush.

(2,577 posts)Don't call Limbaugh a "provocateur," New York Times. He made a career of spreading lies, racism, and misogyny. He destroyed rational discourse all while making millions.
I take his damage personally because I watched his poison take over my parents and my aunt and uncle. They listened to his radio shows, bought his books, and shared his hate with the family. To hear my elderly mother (who gave birth to two daughters) sneer "Feminazis" always brought me pain. And I expect stories of the impacts of this vitriol and hate like mine are repeated all across the country.

I note his passing. I will not celebrate, as the damage he did is irreparable. It's sort of like celebrating if Mark David Chapman were to die in prison. That won't give the world back 40 years of John Lennon's music that we will never hear. Limbaugh's passing won't repair the damage he did to the national psyche while he had the chance, and he used EVERY chance he got.

(2,598 posts)I think what you are seeing here is valid. Limbaugh made his reputation on hate. He was a propaganda master, someone who was adept at making the unacceptable sound reasonable, and you can draw a direct line from him to the Capitol insurrection. Most of the people on the liberal side of the fence are honestly trying to make the world a better place, and when someone like RGB passes away, it's worth noting that globally most people respected her and praise. There's nothing to respect with Rush. He was a vile, evil man, and deserves the condemnation he's receiving.

(32,340 posts)The right wing takes advantage of liberals, when we adhere to a set of good-conduct rules they discarded many years ago. It's not a remotely even playing field, until we meet them on their own trashy ground, eye-to-eye. If you're not up for fighting dirty, stand aside for those of us who are. All that's at stake is our democracy.
And to hell with Rush Limbaugh---very literally.
Jedi Guy
(3,428 posts)You don't get to tell me, or anyone else, to "stand aside." If people on the left sink to the same depths as those on the right, I'll be here to call them out on it. You can't pat yourself on the back for being a wonderful person and then turn around and behave exactly like those you condemn. That's hypocrisy, and I have no taste for it. If you do, well... again, all I can say is that I feel sorry for you. You're letting them win by behaving the way they do.
