Collins: Biden's $1.9 trillion coronavirus package won't get any GOP votes in Senate
Source: The Hill
BY ALEXANDER BOLTON - 02/23/21 02:01 PM EST
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) says that President Bidens $1.9 trillion COVID-relief package likely wont get any Republican votes on the Senate floor.
And she pointed to Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and White House chief of staff Ron Klain as a major reason why bipartisan talks on the relief bill fell apart.
Collins said Tuesday that Bidens senior advisers have refused to come down from their $1.9 trillion proposal, which GOP moderates say is far too expensive given their preference for what they call targeted relief.
As a result, Bidens relief proposal, which is expected to pass the House this week and come to the Senate floor before March 14, will likely wind up passing by a straight party-line vote.

(56,081 posts)West Virginia needs this money more than most states. He'll do some posturing for appearance and negotiation, then fall in line in exchange for steering more of the money to his constituents.
I may be wrong, but I think he'll be much more of a problem on other issues where he can't just be bought with pork.
The payoff for the massive amount of crap he gets from both the Republicans and the Democrats.
My opinion is that he cares more for the people of WV than he does about Democrats or Republicans. Not everyone gives a crap about ideology.

(56,081 posts)But as it is we're very lucky to have someone representing a deeply red state who we can actually work with and maybe even can keep the seat on democratic hands long term. In that state, he's the best we could hope for by far.
A couple of hundred thousand West Virginians getting by or not, depending on whether or not the bill passes, will not forget who wanted to take care of them and who didnt.

Hey Mainers, do you think you eat enough cake seriously, apparently your senator thinks that you eat to much cake and she is just about as close to a dingbat as your former governor, she voted to give a 1.5 trillion tax cut to her buddies, do you not understand that, she gave your tax dollars to corporations that don't give a shit about you or the country, she doesn't like you or the entire country, because a democrat's wants to help you and the entire in the throes a crises ...............JFC

Need to throw this back into their faces...That first tax cut, the 2017 one, if I'm not mistaken, cost over $4 trillion dollars and still counting...

(3,924 posts)On an issue that is supported by 2/3 of all voters, there should be broad bipartisan support as doing what the voters want should be the norm.
But, they are gambling that voters will not remember that they voted pro-insurrection and against what people wanted -- a covid relief package.
It is a gamble that American voters , either do not care or will not remember. In many states, they are correct. Anyone with an (R) will win so as long as they aren't primaried by an ultra-Trumplican they know that they can win. (Think Kansas, Oklahoma, etc) For others this is a big risk. They may face the wrath of voters in 2022 or 2024. But they think people will have long forgotten that they voted against money for vaccine distribution, unemployment benefits, and stimulus checks.
The (R) either needs the most voter suppression ever or voters who forgot everything.
Not sure which they are really counting on. I fear with a 6-3 court that it is voter suppression over short memories.

(1,910 posts)Just do whatever it takes to get Manchin on board and pass the damn thing. If voters want to go back to Trumpism in 2022 and 2024, we are doomed anyway. Just govern as progressives as much as possible and let the cards fall where they may.

(8,063 posts)When I became a Republican in the mid-1970s you could have spirited discussions and debate about policies, and you could disagree on the solutions to problems. But the Republicans raised my taxes in 2018, and by a lot. I'm personally impacted by the SALT limitation and would love to see that limit repealed. It was so obviously targeted toward blue states and blue voters that it needs to go.
On edit: I became a Republican in the mid-1970s. I became an ex-Republican in 2008 and despise what they stand for today.

(98,883 posts)finding out early, so we don't have to play any games of trying to work with a group who has no intention of working with us.
We need to focus on winning the Senate by more than two seats, and increasing our seats in the Senate in 2022
Making Washington DC a state would go a long way to achieving this before 2022

I think yes. Will their voters change by 2022? No.

(8,063 posts)It means you got included in the discussions. If you want to vote against the package, do so. But own that, and explain it to your constituents. I know you don't face them again until 2026, but maybe you can learn a lesson from this.

All they accomplished is getting rid of what the (R)'s didn't want.
Pass the $1.9T on our own. (D)'s will look better for it.

(5,698 posts)Don't vote in unison. Hopefully we pick up some seats along with two states real soon. Of course Puerto Rico will still be some tough senate races, as they've had a hedge fund tax break and there may be a whole industry catering to tax avoiders. I'm in favor having more tax money in the islands but I don't like when it is lower tax levels overall paid by these tax dodges.

(5,129 posts)Instead of the full $1.9 trillion, lets divide it up by Congressional district.
If you live in a RED held district, you get ...nothing.
If you live in a BLUE held district, you get the full benefit of the plan, the $1,400 check, and your small businesses get PPP loans.
Sounds fair, doesnt it?
