Tiger Woods Is Hurt in Car Crash in Los Angeles Area
Source: New York Times
Tiger Woods was injured in a serious car crash, the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department said Tuesday, adding in a statement that paramedics pulled him from the wreckage with the rescue tool called the jaws of life. Mark Steinberg, Mr. Woodss longtime agent, told Golf Digest in a statement that Woods had suffered multiple leg injuries and is currently in surgery. Steinberg added: We thank you for your privacy and support.
The incident happened about 7:12 a.m. local time on Tuesday near the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes, a coastal city of about 42,000 people in Los Angeles County. Mr. Woodss vehicle was traveling north on Hawthorne Boulevard at Blackhorse Road when it crashed, the Sheriffs Department said. The vehicle sustained major damage, the department said.
Pictures of crash scene broadcast on local television Tuesday afternoon showed a black SUV turned on its side in an open, grassy area with extensive damage to the front of the vehicle. Mr. Woods was removed from the vehicle with a hydraulic spreader tool, often called the jaws of life, by Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics, and he was then taken to a hospital. His condition and the extent of his injuries were not immediately clear. The incident is being investigated by the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department Lomita station.
Mr. Woods, 45, has not played competitively since December and had his fifth back surgery in January, a procedure called a microdiscectomy, to remove a pressurized disc fragment that was pinching a nerve. Last weekend, he hosted a PGA Tour event in Southern California, the Genesis Invitational. Interviewed on the broadcast of that tournament, Woods said he had begun practicing and appeared at ease, smiling and joking with CBS announcers about his progress from the surgery. But he offered no timetable for his return to competitive golf. He only said he had hoped to resume playing by the Masters Tournament, which is held in the first full week of April.

(17,862 posts)and the fact that he had recent back surgery that he didn't have a driver. He could use that transit time to do work or just rest. His time has to be so much more valuable than a good driver would cost.
I hope he recovers. I have loved watching him golf since his first Masters. I was out in California for a job interview then and watching it in my hotel. I hadn't watched much golf before then.
Apparently he was driving an event car that was leant to him for his use. They said on NBC that it was supposed to come with a driver. So WTF?

(343 posts)His wealth probably generates thousands a day. He should go everywhere in a limo with a driver. Heck, he could have a guy that doubles as a bodyguard / driver. Why not? I mean really. He has hundreds of millions of dollars. Just like Bruce Springsteen. Just get a car and a driver and party your ass off and not worry about it.

(17,862 posts)You are right about the problem that celebrities have. That is why I never approach a celebrity in public. I remember being at an autograph signing at a comics convention with Jack Kirby (I was 10). I could tell he was tired and didn't want to be there. From that point I figure I should just leave celebrities alone and let them live their lives.

(153,156 posts)I enjoy reading about some celebrities but I am perfectly happy seeing them at official functions; I don't care to see pictures of them doing stuff in their private lives, you know, paparazzi pics
*EXECEPTION for hypocrites; for example, Ted Cruz at the airport

(32,634 posts)Was another car involved? It doesn't look like it. Were there any witnesses? Apparently not, or if there were, they left the scene.
The photos of his car look like the engine is completely out of the car, and the collision was head on. The car must have rolled head first down the hill. Even if he was wearing a seat belt, it would have meant life-threatening injuries.
Healing thoughts for Tiger Woods.

(128,905 posts)a few minutes ago and that reporter said the neighbors noted that the area where he was driving has steep hills including one that has an 8 degree incline where that road is, and if you are not carefully controlling your car and coast down the hill without using the gas pedal but also not braking, you can easily reach 50 mph by the time you get to the bottom of the hill, and could possibly "wipe out" if something happens and you lose control. They considered the road an issue if you are not careful.
There were apparently no other vehicles in the area. The damage was apparently due to a roll-over that went for some 450 ft according to the reporter (the pic looks like it went down into a ravine).
There is supposed to be a news conference at 3 pm PT (6 pm ET) so they'll have more info then.

(128,905 posts)They also said that "he didn't have life-threatening injuries" so that is good news. I think his bigger issue is this will add to his already chronic pain problems.

(62,270 posts)I was curious how a road like that could have 'problems' and looked up fatalities. There was one just a month ago in Jan 5 that happened on that road in that area. And there are quite a few cases of that particular road inviting single car rollovers or accidents. Definitely need some better signage for this road. Went on street view and it looks very lovely, I can see one gaining exceeding amounts of speed and because of the way the foliage is you may not even realize you're going as fast as you are. Then you get to those tight curves and bam you're rolling.
I do think that Tiger was speeding because he was late with his training with Drew Brees, but yeah. Unfortunate.

(128,905 posts)although the worst ones aren't on hills but follow a creek and have resulted in so many accidents that they have spent the better part of several years doing major upgrades to it, not only to improve drainage and traction, but for "traffic calming" and installation of visibility improvements. I.e., the street was where Teddy Pendergrass had his paralyzing accident almost 40 years ago that totaled his Rolls -
There are curves along it that before they put in heavy duty reflective signage, particularly on rainy nights when the power would often get cut on the street lights, you'd have accidents like this -
