HOUSTON (AP) President Joe Bidens public empathy is on display on his trip to a major disaster site since he took office a little over a month ago. The president and his wife, Jill, are in Texas to survey damage caused by severe winter weather and to encourage people to get their coronavirus shots.

The brutal winter weather across the South over Valentines Day weekend battered multiple states, with Texas bearing the brunt of unseasonably frigid conditions that caused widespread power outages and frozen pipes that burst and flooded homes. Millions of residents lost heat and running water.
At least 40 people in Texas died as a result of the storm and, although the weather has returned to more normal temperatures, more than 1 million residents are still under orders to boil water before drinking it.

(107,839 posts)President Joe Biden embraced a familiar role on his trip to Houston Friday, offering both comfort and federal support after a severe winter storm-battered Texas and left millions without power, heat or water.
It's a role past presidents have stepped into amid disasters and tragedies but also one that comes quite naturally to Biden, whose connections with loss and crisis are among his calling cards.
In his first official trip in the wake of a disaster, the President visited the Harris County Emergency Operations Center and later toured and met with volunteers at the Houston Food Bank, where first lady Jill Biden packaged food and water for the community earlier in the day. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, joined the President in Houston, as did GOP Sen. John Cornyn.
Speaking at a federal vaccination site at NRG Stadium, where the Houston Texans play, Biden sought to reassure Texans that his administration would be there for them as they recover.
