Biden vows Texas shelter for young migrants 'won't stay open very long'

Source: The Hill

BY JORDAN WILLIAMS - 02/27/21 09:16 AM EST

President Biden on Friday pledged that a shelter for young migrants in Texas “won’t stay open very long” amid bipartisan criticism over his administration's decision to reopen the facility for migrants ages 13-17.

Critics saw the opening of the facility in Carrizo Springs, Texas, as similar to the hard-line immigration tactics of former President Trump’s administration, though Biden insisted his administration's approach was different.

“Our hope and expectation is that won’t stay open very long, that we’ll be able to provide for every kid who comes across the border safely to be housed in a facility that’s licensed,” Biden said during an interview with Univision on Friday.

Biden said the shelter was opened because “thousands” of unaccompanied migrant children were crossing the border. He added that his administration had been able to place a “significant number” of them in shelters throughout the country.

1. I don't see a parallel between dealing with these kids who need a safe place

and Trump kidnapping breastfeeding babies and toddlers to punish and deter parents. One action is necessary, the other is Nazi-level cruelty.

2. Unfortunately so many people from AOC to Patton Oswalt knee-jerked on Twitter over this.

There's a massive difference between providing shelter and care for unaccompanied minors, and tearing apart families, and this was pointed out to them. I don't know if anyone walked their attacks back but I hope they did.

Edit: Fuuuuck, I went to Oswalt's original tweet and saw the replies accusing Biden of running concentration camps. (Nobody offered an alternative solution, naturally; too busy dropping QAnon-grade suggestions of mass child molestation.) Cultish celebrity worship is not exclusively Republican but it is inherently idiotic.

3. First, they saw "Texas shelter" and reacted, WITHOUT looking into the situation at all. Second....

...none of them offer an alternative.

We have minors entering the country, without parents or adults. What are we going to do about them, get them rooms at the Hyatt? All those complaining about them being put into one of trump's reopened "shelters" should look into the situation.

Jen Psaki was on a talk show the other day (think it was The View), and she explained what's going on. The facility has been totally renovated, it's been upgraded, there is separation between the residents because of the virus, and the Biden Administration has ALREADY found homes for some of these children.

But it's too much work to find out the facts, much much easier to just get outraged, whine, and of course, bash the Biden Administration in the process.

He's explaining EXACTLY what it is, saying it has been "totally misunderstood" and said there's lots of misinformation going on about it.

He's saying that within the last 24 hours people have come to understand what's going on.

I imagine anybody on the left criticizing Biden backpedaled immediately once they actually learned the facts. But it would have been nice if they spoke up only after they knew what it was about. That way it would likely be in support of the actions, not against it.
