Jim Jordan calls for House Judiciary hearing on 'cancel culture'

Source: The Hill

BY JOHN BOWDEN - 03/01/21 05:29 PM EST

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) called on Monday for the House Judiciary Committee to hold a public hearing on "cancel culture," arguing that the committee should investigate what he claimed was a wave of "censorship" occurring in private companies, on college campuses, and other facets of American life.

Jordan, the committee's ranking member, did not give a reason in his letter why the Judiciary Committee, which is tasked with overseeing the federal court system and law enforcement, would have purview over this issue.

The Ohio Republican argued instead in his letter that "cancel culture's long-term consequences to our democracy and our constitutional framework are serious and substantial." He referenced a number of issues including former President Trump's ban from Twitter in the wake of the violent assault on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

. . .

Trump supporters have argued that tech companies were practicing censorship when they banned the former president and other prominent spreaders of conspiracy theories surrounding the 2020 election. After the riot on Jan. 6, Twitter and Facebook both moved to remove Trump from their platforms.

If their owners had a conscience, they'd be doing far more of it. Bring the hammer down. Twitter's latest "5 strikes" nonsense on covid disinformation is an example. Why 5? Is this a version of the "three strikes" baseball non-sequitur? If only a few thousand die because someone twittered disinformation "only" 4 times OK? This is all just PR so as not to overly disrupt the flow of bitcoins/rubles into the owner's wallet.

They have no real interest in legislating or don't know how. They get paid good money to go to Washington to put on ridiculous publicity stunts to hopefully keep themselves relevant to their voters. It is not only an expensive waste of tax payers' money, it is embarrassing as well.

I can picture Gym mulling over ideas of how to get in front of the camera again, so he can put on a real show for the folks back home. "And of course I won't wear a jacket to show everyone what a maverick I am."

What a shameful waste of space.

Simple divide and conquer. You can't run a functioning democracy founded in truth, when one side deals wholly in lies.
KGB groomed Donny since the 70's, I'm thinking he wasn't the only one groomed to destroy U.S.A. There seems to be a lot of them when you see the fruit that this rotten GQP tree produces.

Enlightened people shouldn’t use the trademark phrase “cancel culture” ever. Every mention of it (like now) feeds the word fire they started to corrupt the meaning. Consequence Culture is the perfect substitute.

Never use right-wing created words.

Back when those animals on the right were trying to remove anything they found offensive (which is anything that ether makes them look bad or takes money away from them), it most certainly was 'cancel culture'. However, now that a tiny bit of common sense has been applied to the world wide piranha pool, it most certainly is becoming 'consequence culture'. Now if we can keep this side from devolving into yet another piranha pool, we might actually get something positive done!

They want government to oversee the affairs of private institutions and corporations. They're anti-freedom (corporations shouldn't have the freedom to change their products, like Mr Potato Head, the Muppets, Sesame Street and Dr Suess), they're anti-capitalist (corporations should not be changing things to protect their bottom line) and they're clearly anti-corporation. And anti-progress to boot, but they always were a bunch of reactionary nut jobs.
