A man in New Jersey pleaded guilty to conspiring with white supremacists in the US to vandalize synagogues across the country and intimidate Black and Jewish Americans, according to the Department of Justice.
Richard Tobin, 19, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy against rights, a federal offense where two or more people conspire to injure or intimidate anyone from being able to enjoy their constitutional rights or US laws.
According to a complaint filed by FBI Special Agent Jason Novick, Tobin is a member of an American-based neo-Nazi and prepper group called "The Base." Members of the group describe The Base as a "White Protection League" and offers survivalist training to resist "our People's extinction" from minorities and uses a Nazi-era symbol as its logo.
As a member of the group, Tobin admitted to launching "Operation Kristallnacht," an effort to vandalize synagogues in Michigan and Wisconsin with swastikas and other Nazi symbols, which were spray-painted in the places of worship. In messages to members of The Base, Tobin implored the assailants to also slash vehicle tires belonging to Jewish and Black Americans.

A Camden County man admitted in court Friday that he organized the vandalism of two Midwestern synagogues earlier this year with fellow members of a neo-Nazi social group known as The Base.
Richard Tobin, 18, of Brooklawn, recruited perpetrators who carried out the September 2019 attacks in Michigan and Wisconsin in encrypted social media chats in which he called for a campaign he dubbed “Operation Kristallnacht” — a reference to the organized ransacking of Jewish homes, schools, and hospitals by Nazi paramilitaries and civilians in Germany in 1938.
“If there’s a window that wants to be broken, don’t be shy,“ he wrote in the days leading up to the incidents. “Focus on broad antiwhite elements for now. Jew businesses, etc.”

During a brief hearing in federal court in Camden, Tobin told U.S. District Judge Robert Kugler that since his arrest in 2019 he has undergone mental health treatment, which has helped him manage his violent urges.

A New Jersey man accused of coordinating a neo-Nazi group’s plot to vandalize synagogues and telling FBI agents that he fantasized about killing black people at a mall has been freed from jail several months after his arrest.
Richard Tobin, 19, was released on $100,000 bond last Wednesday, according to Matthew Reilly, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey. A federal magistrate ordered Tobin to remain under house arrest, prohibited him from accessing the internet and barred him from having any contact with current or former members of the neo-Nazi group, called The Base, and another group called Atomwaffen Division, court records show.
The records don’t explain why U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Williams in Camden agreed to set bond for Tobin, who was arrested by the FBI in November. The magistrate sealed court records related to Tobin’s bond request.
A criminal complaint said Tobin was a member of a “white racially motivated violent extremist group” that has "proclaimed war” against minority groups in the U.S. The complaint doesn’t name the group, but its description matches The Base.
From his home in Brooklawn, Tobin communicated online with other members of The Base and directed them to vandalize synagogues in Michigan and Wisconsin last year, the complaint alleges. He told investigators that he had launched “Operation Kristallnacht,” a reference to the deadly pogrom in 1938 when Nazis looted and burned synagogues and Jewish-owned homes and stores in Germany.

Yousef Barasneh, a Wisconsin man, was arrested and charged separately in January with spray painting swastikas, The Base’s symbol and anti-Semitic words on a synagogue in Racine, Wisconsin, in September.

Richard Tobin, the 18-year-old ne0-Nazi group member accused of encouraging people to vandalize Midwest synagogues, serves as a volunteer firefighter in his New Jersey hometown. Fire Chief John McKinney told NJ.com that Tobin has been a volunteer firefighter in Brooklawn for less than a year. He said he was unaware of the accusations against Tobin until he was contacted by a reporter. McKinney says Tobin became a volunteer firefighter through the fire company's “Fire Service Explorers,” which is also a Boy Scouts of America program. McKinney said he never had an issue with Tobin, but declined to comment further. Tobin, a member of the neo-Nazi group The Base, was arrested last week on one count of conspiring with a hate group against the rights of minorities, including Jewish people. The Daily Beast reported that Tobin named two other members of the group to authorities, after two synagogues in Wisconsin and Michigan were vandalized in late September.

Last month, federal prosecutors in New Jersey charged Richard Tobin, an 18-year-old Camden County man, with directing vandalism attacks on two Midwestern synagogues last year. Tobin, they said, also disclosed in interviews with agents that he thought dying in a suicide attack would be “pretty badass” and boasted that he once nearly attacked a crowd of black shoppers at a New Jersey mall with a machete.
Tobin remains in custody and could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
