The U.S. Capitol insurrectionist photographed sitting in a chair in House Speaker Nancy Pelosis office with his foot on a desk told a federal judge its not fair that he remains behind bars.
Richard Barnett, 60, pleaded with a judge during a Thursday court hearing in Washington to let him out of jail, where he has been held since he was arrested shortly after he was among the supporters of then-President Donald Trump who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Pictures of the Arkansas man mugging for the camera as he sat in Pelosis office quickly surfaced and have become iconic images of the insurrection.
Theyre dragging this out. Theyre letting everyone else out, Barnett yelled during his hearing before U.S. District Court Judge Christopher R. Cooper, the Daily Beast reported. Ive been here a long time. Its not fair.............................
................Barnett was indicted on seven counts, including the felony obstruction of an official proceeding charge. The day of the insurrection, Barnett identified himself and bragged to a New York Times reporter about an envelope he had taken from Pelosis desk, adding that he left a quarter to pay for it. He was arrested days later..................

(3,039 posts)You're doing a great job and keep up the stellar work. The legal "system" was designed to be dragged out. I have heard one full year of law school is full of nothing but how to drag out a case.
If you are cool enough to do the crime then you are going to do the time.

(13,588 posts)Barnetts outburst was futile. After a five-minute recess, his lawyers told the judge they intended to file a new bail motion. The judge said he would rule on whether to release Barnett after that is filed, then abruptly ending the hearing.

(12,578 posts)There are a lot of people who would be grateful for those basic necessities of life. If he didn't want to be held responsible for attacking the capitol, he shouldn't have attacked it. This is how the rule of law is different than rule by the mob, asshole.
BTW, yelling at the judge is not going to benefit you. Perhaps if you acted a little concilitary and humble you might not be in custody. One of the issues considered when letting a prisoner out is whether he's a threat to others. It doesn't sound like Barnett has learned that lesson.

(5,377 posts)is a really good way to appeal for leniency!
Works just as well as 'Trump made me do it!'
He looks unhinged in those photographs. A mental health examination and permanent detention in a mental institution to protect the rest of society?
Maybe he needs a T shirt? 'I was invited to a Revolution and all I got was jail time.'
The Trump made me do it argument is laughable. It sounds like something a 5 year old would say🙄🙄🙄.
Its not unfair little Richard B. Dont do the crime if you cant (or dont want to) do the time!

enjoyed himself.
Edit: He could be looking @ 11 years.

(8,286 posts)All he did was violently break into the country's most sacred federal government building, access classified and sensitive information, defecate in her office, likely help injure dozens of police officers and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember. But yeah, besides that and the felonies associated with it: Totally unfair.

(50,552 posts)We could make it fair by putting all the insurrectionists back in jail, along with all the people that put them up to it.
Mike Lindell would have a sad because they dont let people bring in their own pillows, and Trump would be very disappointed they dont serve hamberders but once a week in the Big House...but until Brian Sicknick comes back to life, jail is where they need to stay.
