MIAMI After Gov. Ron DeSantis claimed the state was not involved in arranging for more than 1,200 Keys residents in the wealthy Ocean Reef community to get accelerated access to the COVID-19 vaccine in January, both Baptist Health South Florida which supplied the doses and Monroe County have contradicted his claims, saying the distribution was authorized by the state.
It is our understanding that the Medical Center at Ocean Reef asked the State of Florida for vaccine doses, and the State of Florida asked Baptist Health to take delivery of the doses to our ultra-cold freezer storage for delivery to the Medical Center at Ocean Reef, said Dori A. Alvarez, spokesperson for Baptist Health Systems in a statement to the Herald/Times late Friday.
According to a Jan. 22 newsletter sent to residents of the exclusive Ocean Reef Club and obtained by the Miami Herald, the Medical Center at Ocean Reef reported: Over the course of the last two weeks, the Medical Center has vaccinated over 1200 homeowners who qualify under the State of Floridas Governors current Order for those individuals who are 65 years of age or older. We are fortunate to have received enough vaccines to ensure both the first and second for those vaccinated.
The message also acknowledged that doses were in short supply: At this time, however, the majority of the State has not received an allocation of first doses of vaccines for this week and beyond, and the timing of any subsequent deliveries remains unclear.

(13,582 posts)That really pisses me off. At 60, I'm not sweating it at all, because it's easy for me to avoid contact with anyone and I really don't mind doing so. If I was wealthy, I could really do it in style, and it would be that much easier.
I am getting a little anxious to be vaccinated and get out there though. I'd really love to meet someone nice and start a relationship. I'd also like to be vaccinated as soon as possible because I'm a blood platelet donor. I will be making an appointment as soon as I'm eligible after vaccination. If anyone if bumping me back in line, they are denying someone seriously ill the platelets they need.

(23,339 posts)... whether or not you've been vaccinated. The donation center I went to had increased procedures, separation of beds, etc, for covid safety.

(13,582 posts)not all taking the precautions they should. I see the pics on FB. Given the attitude in this town, I don't really blame some of them. Some are going out only to places that social distance, but they are with ones that don't take any precautions except what they are forced to do at work.
I used to work for the Red Cross too. They are also here but don't collect platelets. It's not safe enough as far as I'm concerned.

(17,536 posts)the company that I worked for for worked at the Ocean Reef Club on occasion. I went out there many times on business. The management and the owners were some of the most obnoxious people I have ever been in contact with. That place wrote the book on "exclusive." Exclusive to the extent of forbidding ownership of properties to minorities and non-Christians. Wealth has is privilege. I remember a story of a boater who had run out of fuel and drifted into their fueling dock. (a long way from any other facility) As I remember it they told him to get lost, they wouldn't take his money and fuel his boat; he was not a member.
They are the kind of people you would like to see busted down to the point that they would be happy to have Jim Rockford's trailer.

(12,383 posts)Everyone in the rest of the Florida Keys knew about it from day one. My doctor told me that the way to get a shot would be to either give a hefty donation to Baptist Hospital, or to have connections at Ocean Reef. The grapevine is very loud and healthy down here in the Keys and we all knew about these things early on, but then Ocean reef has always had that reputation of, Do you know who I am?
I worked there as a home health nurse for years and saw some pretty bizarre behavior, although in truth there were some normal people as well. But certainly 99 percent republicans.
