WASHINGTON President Biden has nominated two female generals to elite, four-star commands, the Defense Department announced, months after their Pentagon bosses had agreed on their promotions but held them back out of fears that President Donald J. Trump would reject the officers because they were women.
The nominations of Gen. Jacqueline D. Van Ovost of the Air Force to head the Transportation Command, which oversees the militarys sprawling global transportation network, and of Lt. Gen. Laura J. Richardson of the Army to head the Southern Command, which oversees military activities in Latin America, now advance to the Senate, where they are expected to be approved.
The unusual strategy to delay the officers promotions intended to protect their accomplished careers was devised last fall by Mark T. Esper, the defense secretary at the time, and Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
They both thought the two generals were exceptional officers deserving of the commands. But under Mr. Trump, they worried that any candidates other than white men for jobs mostly held by white men might run into resistance once their nominations reached the White House.

(32,824 posts)I despise every single white old man who thinks they need to decide the lives of women. Fuck every last one of them.

(33,643 posts)I agree with your general (see what I did there?) sentiment, but I suspect this is the truth of the situation with IQ45 in charge (as the article says) and it's possible these two may have been (at least thinking they were) acting in these women's best interest, career-wise. And there's always someone above you who kinda 'decides' your advancement in the military, it's a scenario you know about when you sign up.
OTOH if these guys actually did this cause they're misogynist themselves, then of course f*** them.

(9,291 posts)Gen Mark Miley, the more uneasy I get. Mr, dress up in fatigues for Trumps photo op. He may have the mentality of a 12 year old boy. We need more adult women in these positions.

(3,548 posts)If the promotion request had gone up the chain and Trump would have denied it - game over for any further promotions for them.
They did a good thing.

(853 posts)Which could have a negative effect on later assignments or promotions or awards... A general officer that gets passed over, his/her career is over. Time to retire or get assigned the worst commands until you retire.
The slightest thing in an officer's jacket can end a career. Get passed over, it's time time to retire. Yes, there is a recent story about an African American COL that had been passed over twice, but finally got his star. But this is extremely unusual.
