Leaders of Newsom recall effort say they have enough signatures
Source: The Hill
Leaders of effort to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said Sunday that they have collected enough signatures to spark a special election this year. At a press conference, organizers announced that the effort has gathered 1.95 million signatures in support of the recall more than a week ahead of the March 17 deadline. The recall movement leaders said they still plan to try to reach 2 million before that date.
The recall movement gained traction as criticism has mounted against Newsom for his response to the coronavirus pandemic, particularly the restrictions against gatherings and on certain businesses.
Newsom won the 2018 gubernatorial race with 62 percent support in the state where Democrats have supermajorities in both chambers of the state legislature.
A poll from the University of California-Berkeleys Institute of Governmental Studies in January determined that 36 percent of respondents said they would vote against Newsom in a special election. Forty-five percent indicated they would stand by the governor if a recall election took place.

California's positivity rate is less then 3 percent and large majority of Californian support a mask mandate. Yet, thanks to rich right wing donors, it looks like Republicans will once again be able to get a recall election by pushing the idea of rolling back mask mandates.
While 2 million signatures seems like a lot, California is a huge state and if you can't finance a petition effort, then it is pretty easy to put anything on the ballot. For example, while Biden easily beat Trump 65 to 35 percent, over 8 million people in California voted for Trump. Thus, you only need about 1 in 4 of these folks to sign a petition.
The thing about a recall in 2021, less then year before a general election, is that Republican do what they do best, run in a low turnout special election where most of the people who even bother to vote are inclined to vote fore the recall. This is why in California, Republicans routinely threaten recalls that are financed by rich Republicans.
So, even though a large majority of Californians support mask mandates, Republicans can successfully gather signatures from people who want to immediately repeal the mask mandate and reopen irrespective of the risk. Thus, Republicans once again turn democracy on its head by trying to shrink the pool of voters by paying an expensive low turnout special election.

Big Republican donors including some prominent backers of former President Donald Trump are zeroing in on a new target as they dig out from the wreckage of the 2020 election: California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Major GOP benefactors are funneling cash into the effort to recall the first-term Democratic governor, whos come under fire for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and his oversight of the states battered economy.
The two groups leading the recall push say they have raised a combined $3.2 million and expect to surpass $3.5 million by this weekend. Most of the cash has flowed in since photos emerged of a mask-less Newsom attending a crowded birthday party at an exclusive Napa Valley restaurant in mid-November. He has since apologized, but Newsom has suffered severe backlash, with some accusing him of failing to abide by the stringent coronavirus protocols he himself set forth.
Some of the biggest donors to the recall effort also bankrolled Trumps 2020 campaign. They include Beverly Hills real estate developer Geoff Palmer, who has shelled out $150,000 to the anti-Newsom campaign, and Silicon Valley venture capitalist Douglas Leone who, with his wife Patricia Perkins-Leone, have given nearly $100,000. Retired construction equipment executive Howard Groff and his wife Susan Groff have doled out $75,000.

(998 posts)So sick of these Republican oligarchs funding endless lawsuits and lobbying for more voter suppression. The GOP can't win elections legitimatelt anymore but the billionaires still find ways to block Democrats from staying in power.

(107,213 posts)It has nothing to do with COVID. That's a bait and switch argument. If we got a right wing Trump supporting asshole like Faulconer in, things would absolutely go to shit here. And the people supporting the recall are the worst possible people you can imagine.

(998 posts)To justify impeaching Democratic Governors across the country and enact more voter suppression laws.
They're getting away with it because of their brainwashed constituents who see mask mandates as a form of tyranny.

(107,213 posts)They use COVID as the excuse because it grabs headlines, but their real intentions are far more sinister.

(14,887 posts)but the rethugs won't hesitate to mount a recall when the next election for governor and statewide offices is 2022!
The last time the rethugs pulled this crap it took Gov Jerry Brown 8 years to correct the mess schwarzenegger left. The brilliant rethug idea of electing a tool with no civic experience

(928 posts)with AH-nold Schwarzenegger & f*cked up that turned out to be. trump is HATED here,(to put it mildly) & just because some idiots who think that because they can afford tp throw their ducats away for a fat, stinky, incontinent, lying definitely demented racist idiot DOES NOT MEAN that the majority of Californians will go for this nonsense. Hell, he doesn't know how to lie convincingly. I susppose anything's possible but I find it hard to believe that this will work again.

(24,906 posts)they are attacking the Democratic Governors of the two Democratic states with the most electoral votes at the same time.
If they are paying the signature gatherers by the signature which is how it's largely done these days, there's going to be a lot of bogus ones.

(6,406 posts)These fucks lost hundreds of thousands of signatures because they were not deemed valid. Imagine that... Republicans committing voter fraud. So it's questionable they truly got enough signatures in time.
Regardless, Newsom has a 50+% approval rating, so I'm not concerned he's going to lose the recall election. Plus I think people are sick of the Republican party's nonstop assholism.

(4,275 posts)Then people will have to choose between voting for the guy who led the state through a fucking horror show Covid crisis and some fucking 'pug hack...
Vote for the guy who went to the French Laundry for dinner but did his best in a very bad situation or a fucking 'pug hack.
Vote for the guy who will have set up a system that will vaccinate 3,000,000+ people a WEEK in CA in April or a fucking 'pug hack.
Its pretty simple...

(8,103 posts)And, I'm still going to vote against any Repub right down to dog catcher. I am against Repubs. This is what they get after four years of misery under Trump.
EVERY time I run up against someone who doesn't mask, I can't help but wonder if they brought the damned bug to my door. Recalling Newsome because he locked down California is stupid and revolting. The Covid-19 virus is NOT his fault, and he handled it as best he could.
No one else could have somehow vanquished this pandemic. At least he tried to do something. All Repubs ever did was sit there on their thumbs and let the virus run wild. That's what they did. Nothing.

Newsoms approval rating is still above water and the Repukes have no strong candidates to run against him. Even if they had a major celebrity candidate in Schwarzeneggers tier, I doubt they would win after how much of a disaster Arnie was as governor.
This is so stupid.
