Georgia Republicans Pass the Most Restrictive Voting Laws Since Jim Crow

Source: Mother Jones

Following unexpected Democratic victories in Georgia in November and January, Republicans in the state Senate voted Monday to significantly curtail the right to vote.

On Monday afternoon, the legislators approved a bill repealing no-excuse absentee voting, which 1.3 million voters used to cast ballots by mail in 2020, including 450,000 Republicans. They were also set to consider a bill on Monday evening ending automatic voter registration, which 5 million of the state’s 7.6 million voters used to register since it was implemented in 2016.

The Senate bills follow the passage of a sweeping House bill last week that cuts weekend voting days—including on Sundays, when Black churches hold “Souls to the Polls” get-out-the-vote drives—restricts the use of mail ballot drop boxes, prevents counties from accepting grants from nonprofits to improve their elections, adds new voter ID requirements for mail ballots, gives election official less time to send out mail ballots and voters less time to return them, and even makes it a crime to distribute food and water to voters waiting in line.

Collectively, these bills represent the most sustained effort to roll back access to the ballot in Georgia since the Jim Crow era. The same is true nationally, where Republicans have introduced 253 bills in 43 states in the first two months of this year to make it harder to vote.

struck down the voting rights act in 2013. Upon doing so, chief justice Roberts famously said:

Writing for the court, Chief Justice John Roberts essentially said that times had changed and that the law, in treating some states differently from others, was unconstitutional.

Besides, he said, another provision of the law still bars discrimination in voting nationwide. That provision, known as Section 2, would be sufficient to police discriminatory voting procedures, he noted.

Since he is not an idiot, I can only surmise that he was in favor of stricking it down because of partisan reasons. His reasoning as stated above sounds like a Susan Collins statement "he learned his lesson".

Who could have guessed racist republicans would jump at the opportunity to pass discriminating election laws the second it was struck down? Pretty much everybody...

Why waste time nibbling around the edges?***

Repukes should just set in motion the REPEAL of the following amendments to the Constitution:

13th. Bring back slaves. It's what Reich wingers want.
14th. Get rid of blacks voting.
15th. Only white land owners get to vote.
16th. Only sub-human slave workers pay tax. NOT wealthy white people.
19th. Women don't need to vote, their men-folk will decide for them what they will think.
22nd. Doturd for LIFE!
24th. No need. (see #14)
26th. Those idiot children have no idea what to think. Just send them off to Iran for war.

That's the only mindset we need to have. They know they can't win unless they cheat. Georgia is blue and I'm sure there are others and voter suppression is the only thing preventing it.

We must and can beat them at their little game...we are on the right side of history.

Bring it!

The more GA Rs try to stop Dem voters/minority voters from voting, the more determined they will be to vote.

Saying the bill goes too far.
The bill still has to pass the state’s house...
