Two GOP Senators have put holds on Rep. Deb Haalands nomination to be Interior Secretary, putting up a procedural hurdle that will delay the New Mexico Democrat's final confirmation vote.
Sens. Steve Daines (Mont.) and Cynthia Lummis (Wyo.) said they will force debate on Haalands nomination, which would last for 30 hours.
Despite the delay, Haaland, a New Mexico Democrat, is still expected to be confirmed since shell need just a simple majority to eventually get to the floor.
A statement from Dainess office said the senator thinks it's important to have a floor debate on Haalands record.

(2,698 posts)and both Daines and Lummis want to make very clear that they are fully fledged members and believers.
(BTW, I prefer to say that she trusts the science about climate change. Saying she believe in it just seems to open the door to a well you believe what you believe and Ill believe what I believe argument which is exactly how all those thousands of righteous people died in the Bowling Green Massacre.)

Both Senator's would like to see protections (i.e. regulations) for public lands & Native American land removed,
to open up for mineral and oil exploration. Senator's would like to Profitize (i.e. privative) public lands.

(9,897 posts)They are a base organization of lowlifes and - YES, it is STILL TRUE - DEPLORABLES (and much more than a mere basket full).
The in-fighting and sacrifice of any pretense of a governing philosophy beyond "Uh...Me like Trump, You all bad" or the ever lovely "Fuck your feelings" is truly a brand that should stain party adherents and ultimately lead to the creation of a new center-right party and a gradual bleeding off of these far right extremists.
I hope there is no further bloodshed in the process, but that is up to the crazies now.

(2,042 posts)to read a quotation from a letter from Coretta Scott King.
Their decision to block Warrens speech was upheld by a party-line vote of the Senate. A University of Miami political scientist could find evidence of only two similar votes in Senate history, the last in 1952.
Whats worse, Warrens remarks werent aimed at Sessions in his capacity as a senator. They instead invoked accusations of racism that were used to deny Sessions a federal judges job back in 1986.
To have failed to reconsider those accusations at his new confirmation hearing would have been dereliction of the Senates duty. No matter how nice Warren might have tried to be about it, there is just no way to avoid imputing unworthy conduct to someone who lost a federal job because of racism.

(2,042 posts)At least he has stopped with the "tele-townhalls." God, how I hated to hear his recorded voice, cheerful as a chipmunk, on our voicemail, inviting us to join in on one of his calls (too much of a coward to hold an in-person town hall, of course!).
I was so disappointed when Bullock didn't beat him. I thought we really had a shot, but our Trump-addled fellow Montanans were whipped into a frenzy by the Mango Menace and turned out in full, frothing force on Election Day.
Here's hoping we get a really good contender in six years to run against Daines. I'm hoping that one of the many celebrities who have recently "discovered" Montana might decide to run for office (if they're a Dem!). Maybe someone with star power could overcome the Republican bulwark here in our beautiful state!

(14,178 posts)I heard already its some kind of record how long his appointees are taking to be confirmed.
BTW, not an American. How the hell did you guys manage, in your Republic, to force the winning President to not be able to simply pick his own appointments and get on with it? He won! I don't know of any other democracy in the world where the opposition can nix the winners choice to head up each department.

(58,785 posts)It replaces their previous majority-power "die in the senate" tactic.
They threaten to delay everything they can by any means possible, not just appointments but all bills and congressional procedures they don't have their own need to move faster. Sometimes they can leverage this to gain some concession, but most of the time they follow through.
