WASHINGTON — Joe Biden will direct all states to make all American adults eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines no later than May 1 in his first prime-time address as president Thursday night, according to a senior administration official.

And if Americans "all do our part" in the coming weeks, the president plans to say, friends and families will be able to join together in small groups in time for Fourth of July celebrations.

"The next phase of our wartime effort will help get us closer to normal by July 4, Independence Day," the official said.

Biden will give his address from the Oval Office one year after lockdowns started at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic last March and hours after the president signed his $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus package into law.

4. Eligible doesn't mean a shot in MY arm

If 200 million Americans still want shots, that's 300 to 400 M doses that need to be administered.

Even if we can keep up the pace of 3 M shots a day, that's about four months until "every applicant" gets vaccinated. As a group 2 person with limited contact with the public, I expect not to get vaccinated until summer.

I hope I'm wrong and I get the shot sooner, but remember that right after the first panicked guesses the estimated death tolls shrank to 240 K or less.
