The Senate confirmed President Joe Bidens pick for the secretary of the interior, Rep. Deb Haaland (D-New Mexico) on Thursday with all Democrats and four Republicans voting to advance her confirmation, which will be on Monday. Haalands confirmation comes a day after the Senate confirmed Michael Regan to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Haaland, the first Indigenous person to be appointed to that position, has been celebrated by progressives as a big deal. When her nomination was announced, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) tweeted, Historic appointment. A visionary Native woman in charge of federal lands. Unequivocally progressive. Green New Deal champion. Exquisitely experienced.

(16,389 posts)I had actually lost track of this one and didn't know if it had happened yet. (What can I say, there's just SO much happening these days, and the Senate has been dragging things out, especially with this one.) But I am SO happy to know this is going to be a done deal in a few days!

(24,329 posts)Not surprised about Murkowski or Sullivan
Joe Williams Jr., a Tlingit tribal elder, let Murkowski know he expected her to vote for Haaland to be confirmed. Native Alaskans are about 1 in 5 voters, and were a major reason why she won in 2010. Sullivan likely saw that he would might need their votes when he comes up for re-election as well.

(11,631 posts)I think the confirmation will come Monday unless I am mistaken. I don't think this article is accurate.
That said I'm as excited about Haaland as any of Biden's cabinet picks.

(188 posts)You would think an article about the vote to confirm Haaland would contain an actual vote tally. But no. If I want to know how many scummy Republicans voted against her and how many crossed the aisle and voted with Democrats, I'm going to have to dig up other articles. Sheesh.
But I'm truly glad you posted this great good news anyway! I expect very good things from her as Secretary.

Lazy reporting.

(7,281 posts)The Senate hasn't confirmed yet. Senate Committees are quite a bit different than The Senate.
I'm only making the point on this, because I've never seen more confusion regarding a mass of other confirmations reported, when they were NOT the Senate; only a committee and sometimes not even the main committee related to or the one overseeing relative to the Cabinet post appointment in question.
I lost count on how many times I read Garland confirmed, when it was actually just a committee of a certain task, when there were more than one. Journalists need to be more specific in their headlines imo.
