Rubio Backs Unions as Punishment for Amazon

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) writes in USA Today:
For decades, companies like Amazon have been allies of the left in the culture war, but when their bottom line is threatened they turn to conservatives to save them. Republicans have rightly understood the dangers posed by the unchecked influence of labor unions. Adversarial relations between labor and management are wrong. They are wrong for both workers and our nations economic competitiveness.
But the days of conservatives being taken for granted by the business community are over.
Heres my standard: When the conflict is between working Americans and a company whose leadership has decided to wage culture war against working-class values, the choice is easy I support the workers. And thats why I stand with those at Amazons Bessemer warehouse today.

There is no "culture war", and "companies like Amazon" are not allies of the left. They have not "turned to conservative to save them"; they've always been anti-union, as have conservatives. He claims Amazon blocks "traditional charities" from the Amazon Smile program; in reality, it's a complaint that Amazon uses the SPLC to block political groups which pose as charities and indulge in hate speech. There's nothing "traditional" about that, and nor are they proper charities, in the sense of an organization set up to help others. His example of a "banned book" is an anti-transgender one, removed from Amazon in the past few days.
Calling being anti-transgender a "working-class value" is a really, really bad justification for finally supporting a union.
On edit: specifics about why Amazon banned the book that Rubio loves so much:
The book sets out to answer "questions arising from our transgender moment", its publisher, Encounter Books, says on its website.
It adds that through the book Mr Anderson "exposes the contrast between the media's sunny depiction of gender fluidity and the often sad reality of living with gender dysphoria".
Shortly after When Harry Became Sally was removed from Amazon on 21 February, Republican senators Marco Rubio, Josh Hawley, Mike Braun and Mike Lee sent a letter to the retailer requesting an explanation for its decision.
...
"We carefully consider the content we make available in our stores, and we review our approach regularly... we have chosen not to sell books that frame LGBTQ+ identity as a mental illness."

Seems a good decision to me.

(21,753 posts)Labor and management working together is the key.
Rubio wants a labor-management relationship where the management treats workers like chattel and labor says Sir! Thank You Sir!

(21,627 posts)These types, of course, are virulently anti-union (indeed, many of the victims in the various 'dirty wars' in the region have been union members).
But they've learned to use union disputes tactically - backing them here and there against employers who won't fall in behind whatever scheme said right-wingers happen to be working on.

(86 posts)And McDonald's, Target, Sears, and all the other corporations exploiting American workers? Liddle Marco may have opened a can of worms for the rethuglicans with this one.

(7,608 posts)A smarter Rubio would STFU. He's for "working-class values" as opposed to working class wages, benefits, and job security. I'm sure he has scripture to support his position.

(11,563 posts)This little weasel hides in the weeds forever, almost letting you forget him. Then he pops up, squeaks a little, but annoyingly, then back to doing whatever it is he does.
As a rule, he would have ZERO sympatico with the workers. Amazon is the epitome of no-holds-barred capitalism, and has been successful far beyond Jeff Bezo's dream, most likely. A Republican Success Story. Horatio Alger-like in its appeal to them. How is that not in line with Rubio's vision of middle-class claw-your-way-to-the-top values?
And, lest he get too high-and-mighty judgmental about what he perceives as Amazon flying a flag of convenience when their interests are at stake. When regressive bastards like Rubio, et al, find their interests threatened, they get in bed with seditionists.
F Mario Rubio and anyone that looks like him.

Maybe punish the Air Traffic Controllers next. Stick it to the Man!
Then the Trades. Make them unionize too, those corporate construction behemoths!! Maybe he can punish Big Tech by making them unionize. Apple, Google, InstaSnapBook, all of them! That'll show em!
Tennessee deserves to be punished, too! VW wanted to put a union shop in there, but left for union-ier pastures! Demand Tennessee revote!!
And while you're at it, North Carolina forbids unions! Why won't NC let us have unions?
Go Get 'em Marco.
