Amazon will no longer sell books that frame gay, lesbian, transgender and other sexual identities as a mental illness. The company made the announcement public in a letter sent to Republican senators who had asked why Amazon had stopped selling When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment, a book by the conservative academic Ryan Anderson, best known for his opposition to same-sex marriage.
In the letter, first obtained by the Wall Street Journal, Amazon writes: As a bookseller, we provide our customers with access to a variety of viewpoints, including books that some customers may find objectionable.
That said, we reserve the right not to sell certain content. All retailers make decisions about what selection they choose to offer, as do we. As to your specific question about When Harry Became Sally, we have chosen not to sell books that frame LGBTQ+ identity as a mental illness.
The letter came in response to criticism from the rightwing senators Marco Rubio, Mike Lee, Mike Braun and Josh Hawley who wrote to the Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, criticizing the books removal and calling it a signal to conservative Americans that their views are not welcome on its platforms.

(63,926 posts)I can only hope that Rubio, Lee, Braun and Hawley get OK with this wonderful change in the American social norms. Let's all live and let live and appreciate differences that make us a whole society.

(42,862 posts)I did my very first Facebook "unfriend" because an acquaintance was promoting a "children's book" that was very anti-gay and filled with lies (ie: homosexuals are child molesters). It was like a glossy version of a "Chick Tract"
I was horrified and sent her a private message letting her know. I know she read it but she didn't bother to reply or delete the crap from her FB wall. So I unfriended. It was sad but satisfying.
The link below describes it... and with a sledge hammer it points out and DESTROYS all the tropes and lies and bigotry.

(295 posts)...that shines from you. I'm trans. You and my Mom (90 in November, one shot down, second next week) would probably get along great. I'm LA born 'n bred since 1956 (with deep roots in the bay area as well), and yes YAY for blue states! Besides, the weather is always better in LA.
The Blue Tsunami is here - and I may actually get to go to Dan Blocker Beach this summer - Kowabunga!
The future is gender-neutral. May the force be with you.

(10,156 posts)I hear this from rw relatives that I have mental illness because I'm transitioning and how I'll regret it and how I'm an abomination in the eyes of God. Like yeah yeah yeah. Like y'all have any right to judge me after y'all voted for the antichrist twice.
Good to get rid of those books. Its horrific that they even exist. You wonder why LGBT teenage suicide is high

(14,735 posts)That is not what I learned from Christ's teaching. It was/is about acceptance and love of all people. Look at the woman at the well, the tax collector, the lepers, etc. he interacted with.

(10,156 posts)They think that justifies them. I tell them they are fake Christians and they are a cult. That seems to make them mad and they say I'm trying to cancel their religious beliefs. Like nope. Not doing that lol I'm not cancelling anything. I cancel stuff I don't like personally. Ya'll being one of those things I don't like. Blocked forever. Bye bitches!
